Well, it's been a good number of years, but yesterday, I almost wet myself in public!!!
I stopped by an aviary/bird rescue sanctuary just to see what thye were like. This place sells large and small birds, as well as rescue unwanted birds. They had SO many different kinds...including a yellow-naped amazon that was rescued after the owner had been deceased for 2 weeks!!! Poor bird is a miracle, as it survived that long.
Anyhow, I was speaking with a woman that works there...when lo and behold, something caught my eye. It was a beautiful male hyacinth macaw!!!!!
One of my dream birds. Anyhow...dont think I'll be getting one soon. The male was $15,000 and the females they have are $18,000 EACH. The lady said she'd happily sell me one or two. I BET she would!!!
Wooohoooo...it was truly majestic seeing on in real life! Just the size of the beak itself was incredible!!!!!
<drooling>
But, spending $33000 on a pair of birds gives me heartburn thinking about it, LOL!!!
Oh, but what a sight!

I have only ever seen pictures of them, so I can understand your excitement at seeing them in the 'feather'.

hi nikki
they really are beautiful birds ,but so many are poached nowadays....and then the owners get fed up and they end up in rescue centres,as you know

hi all,
i too would love to own one too but as you say price is astonishingly high!
Ive handled one in person :D at Desford bird Garden in leicestershire, they have a hand reared male out with all the other birds.
may i say the beak looks huge compared your more commonly seen blue & golds.
he did need his claws cliping as when he stands on your arm being quite weighty they dig in a bit but lovely bird.
Thanks
Dave

Hi Laura,
I was so taken by surprise, my thoughts and conversation with the lady stopped mid-sentence! TV and pictures sure dont show the same presence.
Hi Kenny,
I agree. Many people with more money than they know what to do with (lots of that type here in Austin, with all the computer/high-tech stuff going) decide they are going to get a large bird...and know nothing of them, other than they have feathers. Then , they end up plucked, emotionally disturbed and abandoned later on down the road.
The neat thing about this place is that you CANNOT just go in and buy a bird. You MUST work with them until they feel you're ready to take it home...at least 30 days straight.
Still, ignorant people put their own desires first and forget that a bird is a HUGE responsibility.
Hi Dave,
You are quite lucky! But I must say...it was almost intimidating. The beak size and overall size as opposed to a macaw was ALMOST enough to put a little fear in me, lol. It sounds odd, but I'm not too proud to admit that. After all, even a 10 lb monkey is cute and adorable...but it can also kill you in the blink of an eye, LOL!
Matthew,
Hiya! It certainly is NOT a bird that I would allow my children access to. It's not the bird's doing or fault in anyway...but I know my kids, lol, and it's not fair to any bird to be subject to an environment in which there is any compromise to the bird's feeling of security.
Just wouldnt want to go there, ya know? I agree....not a good pet bird, at least for my household. No amount of wishing and wanting is going to make a bird like that change it's mind on whether it likes people, LOL! And with a bird that size, I wouldnt want to test it either!!!
Thanks everyone! It was such a special treat to get to see it. So pleased that I not only saw one up close, but have the opportunity to share my experience with all of you!

HELLO TO EVERYONE,
IT SEEMS THE ONLY TIM I LOG IN IS WHEN I HAVE SOME KIND OF QUERIE, BUT I SUPPOSE THATS WHAT THIS SITE IS ALL ABOUT IS'NT IT?
I BOUGHT A PAIR OF KAKIS ABOUT TWO AND A HALF MONTHS AGO, THEY LIVE INDOORS IN A VERY LARGE CAGE AND AROUND TWO WEEKS AGO I PLACED A NEST BOX IN THER FOR THEM, SHORTLY AFTERWARDS THE MALE WAS SPENDING ALOT OF TIME IN THERE INFACT I THINK HE SLEEPS IN THERE AT NIGHT.
LAST NIGHT I SAW HIM FEEDING HER AND TRYING TO MATE HER, BUT HE KEPT FALLING OF HER BACK..WOOPS!!!!!   ANYWAY SINCE THEY BEEN INTERESTED IN MATING THEY'VE BOTH GONE BALD AROUND THE TOP AND SIDES OF THEIR HEADS NO WHERE ELSE, COULD THIS BE MITES OR DO THEY GO A BIT WEIRD AT MATING SEASON, DOES ANYBODY KNOW:confused:
SOME GOOD NEWS THOUGH, MY BENGALESE ARE PARENTS, THEY HAD LAID 4 EGGS THAT I KNOW OFF AND I KNOW THERES AT LEAST ONE CHICK BECAUSE I'VE SEEN IT, BUT I DON'T WANT TO DISTURB THEM TO LOOK...
I FEEL SO PROUD AND EXCITED ONLY PEOPLE ON THIS SITE CAN UNDERSTAND WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT WHERE OTHER PEOPLE JUST LOOK AT ME LIKE I NEED TO GET A LIFE AND GET OUT MORE.... DON'T TELL ME YOU THINK I'M MAD TOO!!!

we all feel the same when our birds get youngsters, even though most of us have been keeping them for years you never get over that feeling of new birth in your birdroom etc...as for the other people they dont know what they are missing

Hello Annie,
Congratulations on your Bengalese breeding for you.;-)
Regarding the balding Kakarikis it could be due to overly keen mutual preening, but it wouldn't hurt to treat them with an Anti-Mite product as a precautionary measure.
By the way there's nothing wrong with being mad, it works for all of us here.
