hi all,
After being given a Yellow kakariki from work, hes healthy just needs a good moult to make him look good as looks rather tatty at present.
After looking how to sexe them the bird looks rather large and like a cock to me, so want a hen to pair to him as he seems frustrated as he mates the perch and was regurgitating seed onto the cage wire.
Put him in the flight to see if that helps abit but still want to get him a mate.
Thanks
Dave

Hello Dave,
My first question, if I find a suitable hen for you within what I regard as a reasonable travalling distance, will you be willing to collect the Bird?
Also, do you have a preference regarding the colour of the hen, what will the Kakarikis be sharing their aviary with and what size is it?
Paul.;-)

hi paul,
Prefer a yellow hen for him - the aviary ive put him in is 18ft x 6ft with cockatiels, etc why?
unsure on collection feasability - close to nottingham would be good as cant travel that far easily at present - got 3/4 weeks left and im done :D and ill be doing more driving lessons plus ill hava more free time.
Thanks

hi paul,

So if you know anyone near nottingham or can a bird to nottingham area that'd be great but may i ask how much will a hen bird cost?
Thanks
Dave
p.s - do you know genetics of kakariki colours?

Hi Dave,
I was just curious about wha tyou intended on housing the Kakarikis with, the aviary size you have and Cockatiels as fellow housemates sounds good to me.;-)
I have no idea how much a hen Yellow Kakariki should cost, but I will let you know if/when I find out.
Paul.

Hi Ken and Dave,
Ken,
Thanks for posting the link to the Kakariki Website, the photos there are the first I have ever seen of the true Orange Fronted Kakariki, and to be honest I am shocked at how small they are in comparison to the two Kakariki Species I am familiar with.
The fact is that the Yellow Fronted Kakariki is noticeably smaller than the Red Fronted, but to see how much smaller the Orange Fronted is compared directly to the Yellow Fronted is something else.:D
Dave,
Yes your Yellow Kakariki is definately a cock Bird, but I'm concerned by the second photo, although I'm pleased to see regrowth of feathers I would suggest you wait until the cock has fully moulted before you buy a hen to pair up with him.
Paul.

hi paul,
he isnt moulting - hes just an ugly duckling so to speak.
At work he was in a flight with the other parakeets and he got attacked so all his feathers are a mess and they pulled feathers out of his head especially then he was placed in an unsuitable cage unknown to me in the back of the store away from public in the isolation room, so until i found him someone had put him in a budgie size cage.
so he had rubbed what was left of his feathers on his head out but now he has finally passed to my care he is improving greatly.
The pictures were taken a week or so after getting him, so now hes in the flight and ive had him around 3 weeks ill get more pictures and put them up for you to see in a seperate thread im hoping when he does moult he will look great as he is very healthy and lively but perhaps alittle crazy at present.
The reason i want to get him a mate as since he'd been kept on his own for ages and as soon as i got him home he was getting rather frisky with perchs, the sand on the floor and he was regurgitating food to the bars of the cage, so i want to get him a companion/mate of same species to keep him happy.
poor bird hasnt had the best life really but i hope i can improve it!
So if i can get a hen as soon as possible that'd be great.
Thanks
Dave

Hi Dave,
I just wanted to commend you on the rescue of this cute little guy. Sounds like you've got your own little rescue success going!!!
That is wonderful. I bet he wont be an ugly duckling for long. We can't save all of them, but opening our hearts to one is very special.
How are your goulds doing, by the way?

hi nikki,
Thank you very much for your kind comment - i hope he'll look nice soon enough.
From work ive had over the last year - 3 canarys as well - 1 with malaligned beak, 1 with broken ankle (sadly died though) and the final 1 with broken ankle that repaired but set at funny angle.
As for the gouldians there not doing anything as we havent gave them a nest - ill let the hen rest until i finish and uni before trying again and hopefully weather shall improve by then.
Thanks
Dave
p.s - you been on new look forum of mine?
