im looking to get -

- A Cock Orangeface lutino peachface series lovebird

- black rumped bichenos

- indian silverbill cock - unless matt will sort me out with one i asked about?

- red headed finch - (a long shot i know but hope to find one a some point and will pay 3/4 of a full pair for one)

- trio yellow stars - 1 cock, 2 hens

- asian species - any of the mannakins, nuns or finches within reason.

- would i get better breeding results if i had 2 pair of goldbreasts or do they breed better 1 pair per flight?

also maybe interested in any african waxbills or finches?

and possibly a pair or trio weavers? i like red head quelea or scaly fronted weavers.

Thanks
Dave

hello Dave

Gold-breast bred very well with 1 pair per aviary, you can have more that one pair in an aviary and breed, but the aviary has to be of a good size.

you'll be lucky to get all the birds your after now, but they'll stll be african speacies kicking about, so get them if you get the chance.

as for the indians, i don't know which bird is the hen, so i couldn't really risk catch the spare up

black-rumped bicheno? cannot remember seeing them, would you be better gaining experience with white rumped first?

Matthew

Hello Dave,

I hope you find the Birds you are looking for mate, but I'm afraid the Black Rumped Bichenos would only be slightly easier to find than the Beautiful Firetails you were looking for.:|

Indian Silverbill cock may still be quite possible, and as you say the Red Headed Finch is a long shot as I assume it is a hen you are looking for?

As Matthew has already said there are a few African Finches, Waxbills and Mannikins around, so depending on what you are looking for you may get lucky, try phoning a few dealers.

The Weavers you are looking for are also another long shot, but there might be a handfull of Red Headed Queleas available, it is simply a case of putting the word out in as many places as possible.
I'm afraid the Scaly Crowned Weavers are a lot less likely though, having said that I wish you luck in finding some.

Good luck Dave, Paul.;-)

Another Species they are offering which are becoming increasingly scarce on dealers lists these days are Golden Song Sparrows at £20pr.

Nice one Dave,

I still think it would be worth your while in getting a pair of Red Headed Weavers from Paradise to go with the single hen you will be getting.:D

But getting one or two hen Napoleans may be a bit more difficult.:-?

Good luck anyway.

Paul.:D

woodlea birds still have a load of Napoleon weavers left from stafford according to their website. £19pr i think but i would get at least 2 pairs, separate the cocks from the rest of the weaver leaving only a breeding group of the one cock you have and the 2 hens from these pairs. don't expect them to breed this year as they take upto a year to settle down, however when they do breed you then have 2 unrelated cock birds to make up another 2 more breeding groups.... hey presto you have a colony

i don't have any spare hens myself and even if i do breed them this year i still doubt i'll have spares as i have a few cocks separated like this myself

funnilly enough the chap with the red heads did mention something about a single red headed quelea - i'll look into it

hi paul,

its not the travelling aspect that bothers me its the getting there is a nightmare!

most of the places people of mentioned are miles away from me and to travel all that way to any of them and find they have none of the birds i want would be a waste!

also i have limited time at present - have final 8 weeks left at uni and im DONE! looking for a job at same time also, so anyone know of anywhere animal related e.g. wild type like zoos , wildlife parks, rescue centre, anywhere bird or primate related let me know please please please?

Ive still got a problem concerning getting the 2 im offered just yet too, as they aint exactly close themselves.

Thanks
Dave

Hi Dave,

I'm pleased you only have 8 weeks left at University, but you will also you will be tied down regarding time to collect Birds when you are in full time employment.

I wish you luck in getting a job in Zoo's etc these days, the adverts I've seen all seem to want people with Animal Management qualifications as a minimum.
It seems that years of personal experience with our private collections isn't good enough, but years ago I took my Work Experience while in school at Birdworld in Surrey, while I was there one of the keepers had absolutley no interest in Birds at all, to him it was a fill in job until he found a job going that interested him more.

Regarding travelling to collect Birds you need from dealers, all you have to do is reserve them over the phone, as long as the dealer knows you are going to collect them then they will keep them for a reasonable length of time.

the anpoleon weavers at ponderosa were there last time i went down which was when i picked up the masked weaver family in october. they are a true & proven pair and both birds are immaculate, they were a tad expensive however at £35 pr i think, probably more than that now but it is definately still worth it.
