hello Paul

i know a man in Lancashire who might have some spares he didn't breed them last year, as he lost the cock bird

Hi Paul,

you know i'll keep my eyes open for em, although i haven't seen any lately. have you got a cock bird then? also are you 100% certain that it is the taveta golden weaver and not one of the numerous very similar golden weavers (such as mine)

Chris

Hi Kenny,

that's pretty much why i asked, as near enough the only obvious difference between the African golden weaver and the Taveta golden weaver is that african golden's have red eyes. the confusing bit is that the hens have black eyes, and if the 2 cocks are so alike apart from the eyes the distinguishing between hens of the 2 species is going to be a nightmare

here's my cock African golden weaver so you can se what i mean

Hello all,

Matthew,

If you could do that for me mate I will be most gtateful.;-)

Kenny,

That's the one matey, thanks for posting the photo, nice one.

Chris,

Did you also notice the Taveta also has the burt gold markings on the face, nape and upper chest and has a green tinge on the back and wings?
The cock I have really is quite different from the African Yellow and Golden Palm Weaver cocks, not only in colour but also in being about one third larger.;-)

If I manage to get my hands on one or two hens then there will be a toss up between trying to breed them in a large aviary housing Elliots Laughing Thrushes and Pekin Robins, or sell them on to someone else who seriously intends on breeding them.

Thanks again for the replies, Paul.:D

Hi Matthew,

I did think it was too good to be true and yes I admit I did fall for that hook, line and sinker.

But is that the best you can do, or do you have something else up your sleeve mate?:D

Hi Paul,

i wouldn't have been aware of the size difference from the photos available, i'm glad that that is another difference as it could well be the only sure way of distinguishing between hens of the 2 species. i had noticed the green tinge to the back and the golden-brown markings on the head and throat, however this is the same as in the african golden weaver. while they don't go through an eclipse moult as such i have noticed that my cock will lose the golden brown around the head and chest out of the breeding season, infact when i first bought him he was a dull yellow green all over, and then the gold started to come through later in the year with the green fading slightly.

don't rely on the golden brown markings on the chest and throat as the vary in size in birds of the same species, some might not even show it, while others might show a very large golden brown area over the face and chest.

i would say size and eye colour are the 2 to go for, that and DNA:lol:

good hunting anyway and i'll keep my eyes open

Chris;)

Hi Chris,

Thanks for your advice mate, although I doubt my chances of finding the hen/s I'm looking for are in my favour I can only hope.:-D

If I can't find the hen/s I'm looking for I may have to commit the cardinal sin and pair him to Palm hens.:o

Although I don't want to do that, it may be my only chance in breeding from this Bird.:-|

Either that, or I will sell the cock to anyone who has hens and needs another cock Bird of the Species.

Paul.

hi all,

chris and paul upon looking at both the pictures yourself chris and kenny posted the beaks are different colours.

yours chris appears to be a dark grey were the one kenny posted seems to me black.

hope thats of help

paul,
pairing him to palm hens would be wise since we have so few anyway and im sure cross breed weavers could easily taint the stock we have in the future.

Thanks
Dave

Hi Dave,

the beaks are identical and both are jet black

Paul,

i woudn't advise pairing the cock bird you have to a golden palm weaver hen. the chances are any young will be infertile, and if they aren't then it could lead to a messed up gene pool of the weavers we have left in the country. weavers are hard enough to identify anyway without having hybrids in the mix;-)

i'm keeping ym eyes open for weavers all the time so if/when i hear of these birds available i'll let you know, but you might have to import from the continent as i doubt that there are many around over here

Chris:wink:

Hi Paul,

just found these links while having a quick search on the net.

cocks and hens: http://www.oiseaux.net/oiseaux/passeriformes/images/tisserin.de.taveta.jefe.1g.jpg

http://www.garden-city.org/zoo/animalinfo/Birds/taveta_golden_weaver.htm

then hens don't look identical to those of the african golden weaver from what i've just seen so your job might be that bit easier
