Hi Vixen,

I wish you luck with your Black Swans second nest, and I hope the Black Necks don't let you down on their current nest too.:-D

It is great that certain members here keep and breed something other than the run of the mill Cage and Aviary Birds that the majority of us keep and breed.

The fact that you are attempting to breed these two Swan Species adds a hell of a lot more interest to the Forum, please keep us up to date on any progress.

I also have to add that the Black Swan is my second favourite Waterfowl Species, with the Red Breasted Goose as the first.:-D

The Red Breasted Goose is absolutely gorgeous, as is the Black Swan.

The best of luck to you in breeding them both.

Hi Matthew,we just take the eggs and incubate batch after batch, what ever eggs he can find in about 60 to 70 nest boxes. He does have a lot of them in the breeding season.

brilliant, it is a shame that they are not left to parent rear, but they often make such crap parents, and theres also too much dangers out there an all.

Hi Trudy,

I'm pleased your Father In Law has such a large aviary and that he has good results on hatching youngsters.

I'm sure Matthew meant that certain Duck species can sometimes make poor parents and artificial rearing can be the only option.

Hi Trudy,

I'm sorry to hear of your losses with the Black Necked cygnets,:( but this reflects the problems involved with most birds in the wild, only a tiny percentage of youngsters make it to adulthood.:(

But it doesn't make it any easier for people like yourself who hope for a 100% success rate with youngsters produced in captivity, have you considered taking some of the youngsters to rear under controlled conditions with the hope of increasing your chances of rearing youngsters to adulthood?

Paul.

hi paul
you are right there doesn`t seem to be a very good survival rate for these birds.or any wild birds at the moment i was at the park the other day and was taking some pics of the coot nests the way that they always seem to be floating on the water and last year and the year before there were up to 6 babies following their parents around and now this year its down to only 2 babies and there was a lot of blanket weed on the lake which could have been raked off by the keepers as the parents where having a problem diving ...as they came back up they got stuck in the weed so i would think a little baby wouldn`t stand a chance amongst that stuff sometimes it happens because there is not enough food or the weather is very bad but this was easily rectified if they could be bothered!........i am rambling again as i hate to here of uneccessary loss
