I went to Paradise pets at Swindon on friday to pick up a red faced Crimson wing hen  for our lonely male, and they have had over 400 weavers in!.They have quite a few pintailed good sized birds, red headed & red billed, black winged and masses of bishops, some they are yet to identify as they colour up one was very dark. Could be worth a trip for anyone looking for fresh blood or species. You might be able to pick out something they have missed.

Their tel no is 01793 512400

Hope someone might get something special;) ;)

thanks for the tip off, if i had the room i would, but i have decided to house my red=headed finches and a few odds and sods in the spare aviary, i do actually have a mate down there who could send them up for me, double the shame really.

Hi Sorry guys, forgot to put that they are in Swindon, the post code is SN2 2QJ. It is run by a birdkeeper! Neil and the guy i spoke to(but didnt get name)who obviously works there full time are genuine bird people. The prices i can remember are red billed £18 pr, west nile, black winged, and all similar £24 pr, pintailed £28 pr. They bought the consignment along with loads of waxbills and silverbills,as i think they were the last into the country for now. Chris it would be about 20-30 mins from Ponderosa, but watch for the speed cameras as they always lurk on the A417/9.

03-21-2006, 05:31 PM
Hi Vixen,

is it just a general advertisement or is it one of the adds that have a full stock list with it? if so is there a list of the weavers they have available (i know some have already been mentioned further up in the thread)

Chris;)

Hi Chris, the ad in birdkeeper lists the ones i have mentioned, plus the other birds they have for sale. The guy i spoke to said as they are colouring up they are finding different varieties. The one bird he pointed out was really dark in eclipse,so obviously a differet variety which they did not know. If yoiu give them a ring i am sure they will tell you more as they are usually very helpful

chris

Hi Jo,

i'm guessing that they won't havbe any of the weaver's i'm after then as they don't have an eclipse plumage. unless ofcourse theres an odd hen lurking in there. i'll see if i can get down there on the weekend if only to have a look at what they have

Hi Dave,

you could always try to go by train? you'll be lucky if theres any left in the summer

Hi Dave,

Chris is right mate, it is very doubtful there will be any Foreign Birds left in the Summer (apart from the usual Australian Finches etc),:-( if you know of any Birds available that you need for breeding anywhere in the UK (or even on the Continent), then buy them while you can mate.

It wasn't that long ago that a certain young man took a train journey all the way from Yorkshire down to Dorset and back again in one day, sure you would be right in thinking this particular man is completely mad, but it goes to show the commitment of some Birkeepers.

There will be no imports of Asian and African Birds for at least a year, so get what you can while you can (within reason of course).

Paul.

i echo what Paul and chris has said get them whilst you can, if you really want them you will have to make the effort like i had to. and yes i am that completely mad man, and i will do it again providing the men in white suites don't wheel me away back to bedlem from whence i came from :-D

Hi all,

i see what you all are saying but i scaresly have time to travel long distances or funds to pay for long train rides at present. i finish may/june so therefore will be alot better off.

while we are on the subject of weavers - id love a pair of these 'scaly fronted weaver or speckle fronted weaver.

I seen a pair in this months birdkeeper and loved the look of them - a bit different.

Does anyone know where i could get some? and possible how much i should expect to pay?

Thanks
Dave

Hello Matthew and Dave,

Matthew,

You are to be congratulated on your efforts to buy the pair of Red Headed Finches from Dorset Birds, the journey you made was a huge one but at least now you have the Birds you wanted!!:-D

Dave,

Speckled Fronted Weaver (Sporopipes Frontalis) are the birds you have in mind, unfortunately the Birds you are looking for are far from common at the best of times, your best bet is to buy from the Continent (but it is unlikely that they are available even there).

Good luck to you both, Paul.:-D

Hi All, Chris have you ever been to a pet shop in Great Barr called Petz? I went there today for a nosey and came back with a lovely pair of quail finches, had not seen them before, but hopefully they will go well in the aviary with the waxbills. He has got in Gold brested, st helenas, red eyed, all at prices less than most between £12 -14 pr. Also weavers which he said were yellow bishops, i was not sure at £16pr. his number is 01213586101 and the postcode is B42 1EJ for anyone that might want a look. Some of the waxbills had a few feathers missing, but looked in good condition otherwise. Hope this might be of use to someone.

Hello Jo,

As I mentioned in my e-mail reply to you, the price you paid for your Quail Finches was extremely cheap, even more so considering the present situation that imports from Africa are very unlikely for a very long time.

The Waxbill and Weaver prices are very cheap too, some Specialist Bird Dealers have already gone down the toilet because they can't continue in business without new stocks of imported Foreign Birds, but others have increased their prices knowing that after their current stock has gone that they will have to throw the towel in too.

My advise to you Jo is if there are other Birds at Petz that take your fancy and you can house and breed them, please buy them while you can,;-) down here in Dorset, Birds such as Red Ears, Orange Cheeks, St Helenas etc have increased to £20pr, Blue Caps and Cordons etc are now around £30-£40pr and Weavers and Whydahs are from £25-£55pr.

Once the Summer arrives there will be very little left in the way of imported African Waxbills, Mannikins, Weavers, Whydahs etc, so buy Birds you need now.

Paul.;-)

Hi Paul, We would love to add another flight if poss this year where we could set up some more waxbills, at present we are a bit full:smile: .If i get a chance i will go back and get some more, but if anyone else can get to the Birmingham area, the shop is only about 1mile off junc 7 of the M6. We had missed a pair of indigo Buntings which had been priced at £18pr. The guy had spnt a lot of money building a finch room just before the import ban set in, as parrots are his main thing, so bought all he could get in the finch line just so he had something to sell in there. I just wish i had found him sooner.

Hi Jo,

i will check out Petz as it is quite local to me, at least i guess it is given that it's an 0121 number. i didn't go down to paradise pets this weekend as we have been very busy, but i will see if we can get down next week, if not i break up for easter in 2 weeks time so will have plenty of time then.

i like the sound of these yellow bishops, hopefully they are napoleon weavers and not true yellow bishops which are another species entirely

thanks, Chris

Hi Chris, Petz is at Great Barr, The weavers were quite a bright yellow & black, smaller than some of varietes i have seen, but i dont know enough to say which species, and i think the guy might have been guessing.

hi jo
some of the weavers are so similar in colour and shape it is some times hard to name the species at a a quick glance they sometimes need a closer inspection

Hi Jo,

I wish you luck in building your new aviary before the current supply of Waxbills runs out.

But more importantly, did you miss a zero of of the asking price for the £18pr Indigo Buntings?
If so could you please find out who the lucky buyer was?
They are worth a little bit more than that, like anything from £120-£180pr.

If you didn't miss a zero off of the Indigo Bunting price, could you please let me know what else he has in stock and I might be making a trip there myself.:-D

Paul.

Hi Paul, The price for the Indigo Buntings was what i was told over the phone,by the co owner, i rang back to reserve them only to be told they had been sold a couple of weeks before but had not been crossed off the list:???: . The only other birds were spotted Tanager, and Starlings(in moult), both were in Three figures i didnt write them down. The waxbills which i have already mentioned, cutthroats £14pr,Diamond sparrows £40pr Loads of parrots and parrotike, which are his main interest. Its only a small shop crammed full.

There is probably a few small shops like this around its just finding them. He had had most of the waxbills & buntings since last Oct, but i only happened across his ad as i was looking for something else in a ad paper i dont usually get.

I am still looking for a hen senegal firefinch, hen melba, and cock yellow winged pytilla if anyone hears of any going.

hi kenny,

ive tried to find Scaley fronted weavers but had no luck, so far.

Anyone know anywhere in the east midlands e.g closer to nottingham the better who have birds?

Thanks

Hi Jo,

Thanks for the reply, regarding the Birds you are looking for, I believe Dorset Birds can help you out with a cock Yellow Winged Pytilia and a hen Melba (but you may need to buy a pair of these?).

Sadly Firefinches are becoming quite scarce already, I wish you the best of luck in finding a hen, you may have to buy a pair of these but even then your chances are very slim in finding these Birds.

All the best, Paul.
