this can be caused by birds eating rubish and very small feathers whith there food this then is compacted in the crop . this is known as crop bound .:( the walls of the crop then become week and unable to force the food ect onto the stomach and gissard .this causes a build up of gases so the bird then opens its beak to expel the gases ( burping ) the bird looks dull and in discomfort the crop looks pendulus and distended .death may accur unless relief is obtained . massage of the crop can help it helps to brake up the compacted food in the crop also small amounts of warm water though a small rubber tube can help to disloge the inpacted food another is tympany of the crop if you want to know more let me know roger b

Hi Roger,
Another tip on curing crop compaction involves the use of a warm water and Black Molasses, again by using a syringe and following by massaging the crop.
If you know how, you can also expell the gasses in the crop as you have mentioned, but always be sure to massage the crop from the lowest point and work your way carefully and slowly upwards.
Great post mate,;) I'm sure this will be helpful to breeders somewhere down the line whether they handrear or if it it applies to Parent reared Birds.

Excellent info!!!!!
I read all I could on crop stasis. Turns out I was being paranoid!!
While the chick did look uncomfortable, in this case, it was an over-eager chick.
I contacted a reputable gouldian breeder, and it turns out that some times if the chicks are eager (or if the parents are tired) there is air transferred during feeding.
The chick passed the air on its own and was fine. Now, this same chick is awaiting its first molt.
Great info on crop statis. I have also heard of using baby-food applesauce mixed with hand-rearing formula to try to solve it on its own. No experience with this, though.
Thank you all for pulling together and posting research!!!
