Hi Jay

I do have plywood already, I just thought that these would be more hygienic as they are disposable.

I only need one really just for a template. I did make some of my own last year although they were not very attractive but they did serve a purpose. Obviously not very good for larger birds.

Hi Laura,

I'm sorry I didn't cotton on to this thread earlier, I can provide you with all of the cardboard you need to produce the nest boxes from work.
Doh, why didn't I think of this before?

All we need to do is create the template & hey presto disposable nest boxes all round for both of us.

I will sort this as soon as I go back to work.

Paul.

Thanks Paul

I'm glad you think it a good idea too :D

I don't derive any pleasure in scrubbing out nest boxes and I think the cardboard boxes will be ideal for most finches and waxbills.

Speak to you later.

hi,

here's a suggestion for ya, why don't we draw up a template and place it on the forum for download? people could then print them off, pin them to a peice of card and cut them out as needed?

Hello Chris,

Top idea matey!

I'll work out the template & I hope Laura with her pooter skills will post the diagram. :D

For those of you who wish too keep with the tradition of wooden nest boxes, I find the best way to clean them is to place several of them in a tall bucket with a house brick on top then fill the bucket with a hot water & Bleach solution, leave to soak for about an hour, scrub them with a stiff bristled brush & rinse them thoroughly with cold water & then dry them in the Sun (if you can find some  ) or on a radiator.

Also it is good practice to dust your cleaned or even new nest boxes/baskets & pans with an Anti-Mite powder before providing them for use for your Birds.

Paul.

Hi Laura, Its the guy in the next village to us who has patented the cardboard nestboxes, here are his details

Mike Baldwin, 9 Sunnymeade Close, Drybrook, Glos, GL17 9HD TEL 01594 544169. email tj1bb1mm@aol.com

They are 35p each plus p&p,he does discounts on over 100. We have been using them and the birds appear to like them, and are sitting tight, you can use the round opening,or there is perforations so you can have a larger rectangular opening. If anyone is going to the welsh National,i can take some there for pickup,if you want to save on postage. Mile goes to a lot of shows so if people want them they can pickup from him at shows. If Stafford is on he will be having a table.

I might be able to get some delivered to the Upton,Poole area,as a fellow Parson russell breeder lives there, but i would have to check on that.

LOVE the template! Looks great! And...very clever!

Here are also some ideas I've found using household things...

For a flip top lid:

Note at the bottom of the flip top nest, there is a salt container nest...yes, I admit...I tried this one out of boredom. It is the only one strawbs have ever used. My birds are indoors, so they dont have the room to build their own nest where they please. I tried MANY different types of nests...but alas, the salt container did it.

For a sealed lid:

hi nikki
glad you had some success with a nest that can be made for a few pennies, rather than stick to the conventional ones .a lot cheaper and easier to make:lol:
