I have a young parakeet that we thought was a male. We have gotten so attached to him. Something is happening tonight that is scary to us. It appears PeeWee bis a little girl. It looks like she is trying to lay an egg, and she is having a di9fficult time. It is part way out and she can't seem to get it out. How can I help her, she is part of our family and seems like she is hurting. Thank you for any info you can give me:
Update;
At about 2:30 this afternoon I found a vet that could do the surgery on PeeWee. I took her there and just got home waiting for the call obout how she came through it. The Vet gave her a 50-50 chance to make it. I called everywhere and couldn,t find a vet, so I went to the Human Society and the lady there had a friend that knew a good bird doctor. One call and we were on our way. Now I pray she pulls through it okay. Thank you all for your help, I was about to go crazy. I will update as I get the information

Massage the vent with preferably olive oil or if not vegitable oil. Try not to press to hard for fear of breaking the egg, but also house the bird with extra heat ( a hopital cage if you have one).
This is the best we can advise. Please advise us of progress, Paul Hearn will stay on line to hear your results.
Please act quickly, I hope all goes well.
PS If you have pro-biotic, is there anyway you could give your bird some via pippette? this could help with the stress your bird is under.

I rubbed the vent area with oil . To mormally pass the egg do you know how long it usually takes? This is the first time something like this has happened to a bird of ours. It seemed to come on so quickly. Thank you again for the advise, I think my wife and I are almost as Stressed out as she is

Hello Dan,
I'm sorry mate but there is no normal time for this, please don't log off until the egg is passed, I'm worried that you may lose this Bird, but I will be far happier if you could hang on for me so I know that I may be of help.
Paul.

hi dan
there is really nothing more you can do ,there is a last ditch procedure that you can try if the bird is getting to stressed but it needs a delicate and swift hand it works like this you put hot water in a small jar and the steam sometimes relaxes the muscles to let the bird pass the egg but as i have said it is really a last ditch attempt if you can see the sphincter contracting she will be obviously trying to pass the egg and if she is pushing, as she pushes you could apply more oil so when she relaxes again the oil will go back into the vent and help with lubrication but try and dab the egg with the oil instead of the vent then obviously the oil will go into the vent,we all have our fingers crossed for you but as laura says try and get something inside her to releive the stress

For the information of all that tried to help me with PeeWee last night. She is about the same this morning as last night. The egg seems to be out of her but it is still inside the membrane. Just the tip of the egg is sticking out. I again applied olive oil to the egg and the membrane holding it. We keep hoping she will pass the egg. I have been unsuccessful in finding a Vet. the help me:|

hi dan
can you tell me if the membrane is red or clear as she may have passed the egg and had a prolapse witch means the uterus has come outside the body and is wrapped round the egg if it is red then it is a prolapse and the egg will need pulling out of the membrane and the prolapse pushing back into the body.ite very much like a bad case of hemmerhoids

Hi Kenny!
It is SO hard to find an emergency vet for birds. It really sounded bad!! I too hope he finds another feathered friend.
You guys are an amazing bunch., I wish I was online that night to help, as Pennsylvania is only 1 hour ahead of us. (You are 6 hours, right?)
Good to see you!
