hi all
i am into the planning stage for cages,i want to start off with a bank of say 16 24" finch cages built from scratch as i dont want a trace of my old cages as they have been painted over and over again and i know if i put them in a new shed i would regret it................so i need some advice do you think i should purchase new cage fronts(finch) already painted black as i told matt i intend getting some waxbills hence the narrow bars but i dont know wether to stick with getting cage fronts or making them up from wire netting.i have seen netting fronts and some do look good but some look awful depends on who makes them i suppose but i want them to look neat so do you lot think i should stick with cage fronts or make them mysekf out of netting.the reason why they will be 24" is one they are going to house javas also, but i understand that if waxbills are going to be housed these would be a decent size ,i intend putting a few double breeders of the 12" variety but i need the shed up before i know for sure where these are going these cages i have planned out is going on the sizes i have been given by the shed maker any other advice and or questions would be greatly appreciated

hello Ken, great your moving ever closer...

i would definately recommend using cage fronts, they look neat and tidy, but not only that because of thier vertical bars they are really easily to keep cleam, all you need to do is to wipe them down with a cloth now and again, where as with netting cages because they are all little squares theres loads of corners and angle that become difficult to clean. most of my cages i built them using white enamelled cage fronts so they just wipe clean.
it depends on what the cages are like i have have build some odd size cages to bit the room i have with wire-netting but the rests are front cages fronts - i bought mine in bulk from wades cages, i wish i knew you were going to make them early because i have given a load away.
your right Ken waxbills do need a little space and hgher cages to breed.
are you going join our family and become a member of the WFS?
also when are you hoping to purchase your stock? and what waxbills were you thinking of?

hi matt
thanks for your input i think i will go for the cage fronts mate ,i think iwill go for orange cheeks to start with as i dont want anything to delicate to and if i do get some i will be joining the w f s i am already a member of zfs and a f s from a while back when i had heating in the 1980s so i will be going back to that i have got all my old thermostat/heating tubes but i cant do anything until the shed is up and as i have said the fence needs doing first.....i am just planning my cages i know the exact inside measurements and have allowed for insulation and other stuff i will probably end up with the fronts only being 22" but i shall give them a bit more depth as i have a height of 6` 8"ins to play with in height and the width is 8ft so thats why i want bigger fronts for the main bank as there is plenty of other places i can put double or evn triple breeders if i want

hi matt
i have seen that if you buy them in 10s you get a discount no matter what the size so i might get all my 24" say about 20 and then buy a dozen smaller ones i will have to look at the sizes as i want them as deep as possible
