Hello all,

I know this question has been asked on another Bird related Forum, but if this was the case and money was no object, which Bird Species would be the ultimate in your own collection?

Paul.:D

hello Paul

2 types of birds are on my died and gone to heaven list,

1. the green avadavat, theres only about 6 pairs left in the country, and if you want to buy them through europe they will cost about £1000 a pair!

2. the pekin robin, i have like these for years, they are truely beutiful birds, they are currently very expensive though i could probabily stretch to buying a pair of get them for birthday, but i do not have the room to dedicate to them.

I think that I would like 2 pairs of Pekin Robins, various Starlings and I would love a pair of Hornbills.

But I might change my mind when I have thought about it a bit more

Hi Paul,

a small colony of Sociable Weavers, around 4/5 pairs of Pekin Robins, a pair of Mandarin ducks, and an Emu:-D

Chris;)

Hello all,

It's very interesting to see Pekin Robins mentioned in each post so far, my personal ultimate Bird Species would be the extremely gorgeous Spangled Cotinga:-P there isn't a smilie here that demonstrates how far my own tongue hangs out of my mouth as I even think of these Birds.

Come on people, please let us know which Bird Species would be your ultimate provided money is no object.

Paul.

This is going to sound boring and predictable for those who know me - but I stick by the Bullfinch. I have these birds now and it's not like they cost 1000's. But if money was no object then I'd have a lot more of them and a massive row of good-sized aviaries to put them in. There'd be other birds I'd go of course for, but these little beauties would take priority as usual. ;)

Hi Matthew,

I have to join you on the Green Avadavat, a Species I have stupidly passed up when available to me for around £30-£40pr.:(

Then again I do regret not buying and breeding from a lot of Bird Species available to me over the years, but in my defence I had no idea that availability of these Species would ever be in question.

The time is now to ensure the future of not only Asian Bird Species in UK Aviculture, but also African and South American etc.

Paul.

Definately Hyacinth macaw would be on my list...along with a hawk-headed, eclectus, greenwing.

Oh...and green avadavats, lots of strawberries and a rainbow of gould mutations.

Honestly, though....hard to say, as if money was really not an option...the list could go on and on as time passes.

Wouls also focus on awesome housing for them as well.

Lol about the emus, Chris...

Are you serious? We live in a small town...powered by tourism. No big stores or hotels, only small shops, art galleries and bed & breakfasts. Not even a town...technically, its a village. Anyways...there is an exotic game ranch on the outskirts...it doubles as a bed & breakfast, where you can look out the window of your room and watch zebras, anteloupe, etc...anyways, they have a "herd" of emus as well. Lots of people have them here, lol, and, not being raised here in the South, I find it odd.

See, I know we are all yankees to y'all, lol...but here in the South, Im a foreigner...as THEY call me a yankee too. Dates back to the Civil War era...you're either Dixie or Yankee. Then there's the mentality here in Texas...you're either from Texas...or you're from out of the country...aka the United States.

hi nikki
did they have yellow legs,if so they are the ones sometimes they are called sugar birds and some times honeycreepers.they would do ok where you are but they need heat and nectar

Hi Kenny,

Dont remember the leg color...but it had the name honey in it...a long nectar-type beak and was a brilliant blue. The other bird it was selling as a pair with didnt look like it, though, colorwise. Are the hens of the honeycreepers very different from the males?

kenny
04-27-2006, 09:38 AM
hi nikki
yep the hens are a greenish brown colour so they probably where a pair if they looked different to each other

ken8-)

kenny
04-27-2006, 09:40 AM
hi nikki
they would be better of in a large flight or an avairy because if you kept them in a small cage they would make a right mess because of the droppings

ken

Strawblady2000
04-27-2006, 02:56 PM
Lol, Kenny...

Yeah, I can imagine their poo being like that of lory poo...very liquidy/splashy due to the diet.

Yes...that was them then. They were probably THE most striking birds I saw. And...probably the most expensive, lol, aside from the macaws and hawk-headed parrots.

We have a very large property now (about 4 acres) but as we lease, I dont want to invest in an outdoor aviary that would be a hassle to move. So...once we buy a property, I'm gonna give it a go.

They can tolerate high humdity, right? Summers get in the 100's with 90% humidity, so it feels like 115-118 alot of the time. But winters can dip below freezing as well...and get very dry (15% hmidity).

kenny
04-27-2006, 03:15 PM
hi nikki
when you have built your aviary,(and you will eventually ) you can get some of the more exotic species to keep outside if our weather was like yours i would have some tommorrow ,or when my new shed and aviary get finished

Hi all, I think i would have a pair of Lilac Breasted Rollers or a pair of Bee Eaters, it would be great to have the right conditions to keep them as well.I think that the bee eaters are my most favorite birds.
