At the end of last year my husband was in the process of builing a new aviary.....we have now changed our minds and I now have to seriously re-think the species I keeep and breed.

It is going to be a very hard decision to make......do I continue with the weavers, or do I concentrate on the waxbills?

I currently house:- Waxbills, Weavers, Javas, Chestnut Sparrows, Jacarini Finches, Zosterops, Strawberry Finches, Parson Finch, Hecks Finch, Green Singing Finches, Rosa Bourkes, Diamond Doves, Cut Throats, Bengalese and Quail.

Although I have a large aviary I can't see them all living happily ever after together :(

Hi Laura, I think you should keep both as you obviously have a rare gift with these species, so I reckon another setup for waxbills as your weavers seem to love their current housing setup.

Good luck for the new season

Hi Karl, thanks for that.

I am still unsure as to what I am going to do. I could try breeding the Waxbills in cages, but I must admit I would prefer for them to breed in the aviary.......just my own personal preference.

Good luck to you too.

Hello Laura,

It's a shame you & Roger have decided to keep just the one Aviary, but I understand your reasons for doing so.

My view is that you should continue with your Weavers, Jacarini's, Waxbills, Chestnut Sparrows, Cut-Throats, Green Singers & Zosterops.

If you wish to sell any of the other Birds you have, they are all well established in Captivity & you could always buy some more if you ever wanted to at another time.

Paul.

GOOD NEWS!

We have decided to build a second aviary after all! It will be smaller than first anticipated but I think it will be ideal for my Waxbills. I have mentioned before the species I keep, will the Waxbills all live together harmoniously?

Hoorayyyy

Hi mate thats great news! :D

Please post the dimensions of your proposed second aviary, but I'm sure the Waxbills you have should have should be O.K. together.
Am I right in thinking you have one pair of Strawberry Finches, one pair of Red Eared, one pair of Gold Breasted & two pairs of Orange Cheeked Waxbills?
Although I do think you would do better to breed the Strawberries inside (due to your hen Eggbinding last year), although I know you don't like cage breeding, you do also realise we cannot replace Strawberry Finches as they have gained Gold Dust status.

Paul.

Hi Paul

don't tell Roger yet, I have plans for him to build a larger cage to go in my shed for the Strawberry Finches. I am also worried about them after last years events. So I thought a cage larger than a double breeder would at least give them space to stretch their wings. Should the nest box be internal or external I have seen both types of set up, I think internal may be best so that no one is tempted to peek inside.

The reason I say don't tell Roger is because I want him to finish the 'other' aviary first :D

Hi Laura,

I'm glad you have chosen to breed the Strawberries inside, to be honest it makes very little difference whether the nest box is internal or external, either way I'm sure the Birds would be intolerant of any nest inspections.

Anyway, 'Mums the word' until Roger has finished the second aviary.
