Maggots

Hi

I am considering feeding maggots to my Starlings as well as mealworms, not only to give them a varied diet, but also to cut down on my live food bill.

I have heard and read that maggots need to be 'cleaned', but someone told me the other day that he didn't feel it was really necessary :?

Do I or don't I clean them, and if so what do I use....... bran?

Hi Laura,

Magotts do need to be cleaned before feeding them to your Birds, the black line in the Magotts stomach is the bit that needs to be cleared out before they are safe to feed to your Birds to avoid Botulism.

The best medium to keep the Magotts in to clean them is either Maize powder or Flour.
