Hi Matthew,
i think you might be in luck mate, someone has just registered on FF3 who keeps a flock of red billed quelea, they may be of some use to you. i've made a note of them anyway as having weavers.
as far as i know they are much the same as any other weaver to keep, possibly less aggressive but i wouldn't know. Anyway, the diet would include pretty much the same as what you feed your waxbills. Foreign finch, millet sprays, some mixed canary, beogena universal or similar(while breeding) and the usual livefoods of waxworm, mealworm and fruitfly.
i've never actually seen any of my weavers eat any greens, only shred them for nesting. is this just my observation or have others noticed this also?

Hi Matthew,
I've been lucky in seeing a pair of these Birds in a shipment of Red Headed Quelea/Weavers at........................... youv'e guessed it Dorset Birds!
And they (the cock at least was gorgeous)!
The cock Cardinal Quelea shows a larger area of red down to the breast, than the closely related Red Headed Quelea.
It has been mentioned that Red Billed Queleas may actually be monagomous (one cock to one hen), so the same may be assumed for other Quelea Species?
I wish you luck in finding pairs of this rarely imported Weaver Species.

Hi Matthew,
go for whatever is best for you mate, i know the weavers will require a flight and various plants to breed successfully, however jacarinis may be different? best ask Laura or Paul about them.
i don't know if this will help you choose, but i know of jacarini breeders, however have yet to hear of a cardinal Quelea breeder

Hi Matthew
My Jacarinis' have bred very well this year and they were housed with my weavers. I bet that hasn't helped much :-?

Hi Matthew,
Put it this way, you are far more likely to find Jacarini Finches than you are Cardinal Queleas.
But if you happen to find Cardinal Queleas then please go for it mate!

thats what iwas thinking Paul,
Harlington have a few but if they croaked it, i probabily wouldn't find any more.
Matthew
matt, .
take a risk, you may never see them ever again, you maybreed them.

Hi Matthew,
As much as I would like you to join in on breeding Jacarini Finches, there are far less Cardinal Weavers available at present.
Gary has a very good point mate, but obviously it all comes down to personal preference.

there are lovely birds, the second i saw them i thought i'd love a few.
i have a few reasons though stopping me, one they would have to go into the waxbill avairies, which though these birds looked docile and where infact been bullied by the whydah's, i'm sure because of thier size/activeness they would intimidate the waxbills and may stop them from breeding i had the same problem at the start of the year, with introducing a pair of goldies in their.
2 there wasn't many left and they could have been all cocks???? (how did you say they were sexed again?
if i was to get them they would be stuck in the winter quarters which is a 6ft flight with 3 pairs of waxbills in.
the birds seemed to be at a good price, £10 each however as they were priced at this, would they be all cocks?
is there any down your way Paul?

Hi Matthew,
i suppose the only thing i can think of is: do you have space for another aviary?
i'm not sure how to tell the sexes, however would i be right in thinking the cocks have the red patch and hens don't, or to a lesser extent?
