hello all,

make sure your sheds and avairies are well secure for this winter,

i live in an exposed position, and the garden gets a right buffeting from the wind, today the wind ripped half the felt off my oldest shed, so i have had to do some quick repairs, and when i get the chance i will need to re-felt the roof.

Hi Matthew,

i live on a bit of a hill also, and with the aviary being at the top of the garden which is higher up still it is pretty exposed. Never had any trouble last year so i hope it's the same for this year, although it is 12 foot longer which is quite a bit more for the wind to grab hold of

Good advice ;-)

This wind is really driving the rain into my aviary, I had about an inch of water in one section today :-| I have had to move the quail out as they were stupid enough to go wading through it!

Roger has blocked up all the areas he thinks the rain could be coming in, but we now think it is seeping through the concrete block wall :???:

Hi all,

So far I've been very lucky, my aviary hasn't suffered any wind or rain damage, which is great considering I have a Madagascan Mannikin chick which is only a few days old and yet another nest of three newly hatched Jacarini Finches.

Cheers Matthew,

I'm hoping even more today, I've just discovered three newly hatched White Headed Nuns and one unhatched egg.:grin:
The aviary is very well protected though, and the weather is very mild down here compared perhaps where you are Matthew?
But having said that, I do know where you are coming from mate, I should have brought all of my small Birds in for the Winter by now, I'm just hoping Winter will start next Month and not in the next day or two.

well done Paul, your a top breeder,

we have had a mild spell for a while though its turned cool again (well about average for this time of the year), and the wind is really picking up now.
must be nice in a way to have the weather you southerners have.
i have stopped all breeding now expect a pair of red-cheeked cordon's in the cage, they buggered about all year and finally started to lay on the last 2 days of them been in the outdoor avairy.

Hi Chris and Matthew,

Chris,

No mate, not all of my Birds breed this time of year, only Madagascan Mannikins, White Headed Nuns and Jacarini Finches, but the Rhodospingus Finches are due to start on Christmas Day, and my three cock Tri-Coloured Nuns will lay their first fertile eggs on the 1st of April.

I know I put the Birds out late this year, but this is the very latest I have had Birds breeding in any year.
I know one thing for sure, I wont let any of my Birds breed this late ever again, I'm scared stiff things will go pear shaped on the first night of cold weather:roll:

Matthew,

I'm not a top breeder mate, I've just pushed my luck way too far this year, the aviary block is very well protected from the wind and rain, and the temperatures are very good for this time of year, but there is obviously a risk that I could be caught out by a sudden drop in temperature at any time!

I can only hope that Nature will be on my, and my Birds side until these chicks are reared.

Paul.;)
