I have a pair of Jacarinis that successfully raised 2 young at the end of last season. They are all currently housed together with various other finches and waxbills in an indoor flight measuring 4x6 x 7 feet.
The thing is my male Jacarini seems to be coming into his breeding colours again and is displaying to his mate. Should I place nesting material in the flight for them to use?

Hello Laura,
How many hours of light do your Birds receive in the shelter?
If it is around 10-12 hours this will be too many, and your Birds may be coming into breeding condition early besause of this.
My main concern is if you let the Jacarini Finches breed in such a small area with so many other small Finches, due to the cock Jacarini's territorial behaviour at breeding time he may become too aggressive in too small an area.
I would suggest cutting the hours of light a little more (15 minutes a week & then increase at the same rate to get back to the normal daylight hours), and hold the Jacarini's back until the weather warms up a little then release then into the main aviary.
One question though, has the cock Jacarini shown any aggression towards the two youngsters?
Paul.

Hi Paul
You are right, I am allowing too much light.
In answer to your question, I have not noticed any aggresive behaviour from the male.

Hi Laura,
This would indicate that both your 04 Jacarini's are both hens as I suspected, there seems to be a serious shortage of cocks at the moment, everyone I know who has Jacarini's need odd cocks.

hey paul/laura,
Ive been in contact via email today - regarding a pair of these someone has offered for sale on birdtrek!
Ive asked him if he is in contact with you paul and if not then requested details so i may pass them onto you,
hes offered just 1 pair of these for sale.
Thanks
Dave
p.s - is £50 about right?

Hello Dave,
If the person you have contacted will be keeping Jacarinis to breed from other than this pair for sale, it might be a better idea to pass my contact details onto them. in case they are relluctant to pass on their details.
£50pr is not an unreasonable price for a pair of Jacarini's, I have recently seen them advertised for £60pr, but if at all possible try to knock them down to £45.
If you do manage to buy these Birds, I hope you will be interested in exchanging one of the Birds with the group involved in the breeding programme for Jacarini's? This is to ensure that a diverse gene pool is available in establishing these Birds in the UK.

Hi Matthew,
If you are seriously interested in buying a pair of Jacarini Finches along with Dave, I would say go for it!
Dave is correct that I have bought two cock Jacarini Finches from Peter Moore in the past, the Birds I bought from Peter were very good and I still have a single cock from him.
I hope that from this offer of two pairs, that exchanges can be made to broaden the Gene Pool for all concerned in establishing Jacarini Finches in UK Aviculture.

Hi Dave,
My past experience with Peter is very good, the Birds I have bought from him have been excellent!
When Peter describes the Birds being 90% coloured up, this is normal for this time of year, Jacarini's will have a buff edging over the uniform black feathering, in the Spring the cock Birds will show all black plumage depending on their age.
