Nest Building

Did you know that Sociable Weavers build nest 'mansions' that can accomodate up to 500 birds at one time? :shock:

amazing that if a remember rightly i have seen this on tv,

natural world did a programme mainly on parrots, but it did as i recall show their nests, it must have been done about 13 or 14 years ago as i was a wee nipper back then but we did record and i watched it regularly for about 10 years unfortunity i watched it for too long and it screwed up.

Hi Laura,

i have seen these birds and there nests on the TV many times. as i recall in many counrties they are actully a pest as they build there nests on telephone pylons which become too heavy and tear the things down, depending on the pylon it can take out phone lines or cause power cuts!

if i remeber rightly, the nests actually have a microclimate inside which is ideal for the birds and there chicks, keeping a constant temperature within one or 2 degrees throughout the day and night.

i would love some birds like this but somehow i don't think i could ever have an aviary quite big enough for the huge nests! it was infact these very birds that drew my attention to weavers in the first place, that followed by yourself and Paul
