Hi all

I have a hen Jacarini in an indoor flight and I have noticed the past two days she is having trouble flighing up to the perches.

It seems that flighing high is a little too much trouble.

Has anyone got any ideas as to what can be the cause of this:-?

Hi Laura,

i suppose the obvious question is is the bird moulting and does it have any of it's primary flight feathers missing?

Chris:wink:

Mmm...I don't think so, but I will double check tomorrow ;-)

hello Laura,

thats my first guess as well

the other obvious one would be birds that are over weight or unfit, i had this have to a hens Zebra a few years ago.

but that is unlikely because shes in a large aviary is she not.

The indoor flight is much smaller than she is used to, but there are not many birds in there.

I think the other thing to bear in mind she is my SUPER hen, and has laid 4 clutches this year but successfully raised 7 chicks!

shes probabily bottom heavy with hundreds of eggs she is producing for next year

hi laura

have you got more perches inside than out ,if so she might be used to just hopping from one perch to another instead of stretching her wing muscles

I guess all of these are a possibility, espcecially Matthews diagnosis

Hi Laura,

i had a similar problem with one of my canaries earlier in the year, however she has some sort of allergy to nest fibre (the natural stuff you can buy, not coconut fibre the other one) and gets queezy so to speak. the other problem was she nested in the food pot on a few occassions and damaged her primary and tail feathers, that combined with the respiratory problem from her allergy meant she couldn't fly very well. the problem has pretty much sorted itself out now she's moulting and outside in the fresh air.

Hi Laura,

I'm afraid I can't think of anything other than what has been stated already,:-? but the moult is an obvious thought, maybe if she hasn't started moulting yet she may be about to?
Another thing to consider is the fact she has laid so many rounds and reared the chicks too, she might simply be knackered.

I would suggest putting a Vittamin supplement in the Birds water, and provide mini Mealworms fed on Eggfood or Insectile mixture and then dust them before feeding to the Birds.

Apart from the above, I haven't a clue what else to do?:-|

Paul.

an exercise machine for birds wouldn't go a miss:-D all you need is a TV and the Motivator Man:lol:

hello Paul

just out of interest, why do you say dust them down a little after feeding the live food eggfood?

Matthew

chris

Hi Matthew,

it just adds a bit of vitamins to the mealworms when eaten, and also sorts out the phosphurous:calcium ratio

Chris:wink:

oh right, he meant dust them with a vitamin powder, i see, i thought he meant dust the meal worm after feed them eggfood for some resaon or other, as i always feed my livefood on dry eggfood.

Hi Laura,

I'm pleased the Jacarini is OK, but back to the Green Godess, I can't believe with all of the members here of the older generation that nobody mentioned a Fire Engine.

Paul.

Waxbillman

how could we forget them,

they ran the fireservice, when the firefighters when on strike up here,

now sadly they have been de-comissioned after half a centuary service, and sold off.

Hi Matthew,

Well said mate, I didn't know what a Green Godess was until the Fire Service strikes, a work colleague answered my question of 'what the hell are they?' (I think that's what I said:roll: ) as two of them passed us driving in the opposite direction during the strike.

It is hard to believe that they came into play during the strike, but shortly afterwards they as you say were decommissioned.:?

Paul.

very sad really, part of history, finally ended,

they sold them off at a few grand each so now they will be moth-balled in some rich collectors shed.
though better a shed than the knackers yard,

Matthew
