Hello all,
I had good news today in the form of newly hatched chicks in my outside mixed aviary, even more Madagascan Mannikin chicks, I am stumped for a valid reason why these Birds haven't been established in UK Aviculture before now?:-|
I only received my adult Birds last year all of which were closed rung Continental bred Birds, although I have had only one pair breed this year, I can see that along with the breeding results from other breeders that these tiny Mannikins will be established safely in UK Aviculture in the next year or two.
I know of one breeder of Madagascans that used both Bengalese as Foster Parents, and Parent rearing methods to produce 30 + young from two pairs of Madagascan Mannikins.

Cheers Chris,
I just hope this mild weather will hold out long enough for them to be reared successfully.:-?

hello Paul
well done!!
i'm glad to hear that people are breeding these beutiful little birds, i have only seen them once and that was last year when someone took them to the WFS meeting for exchanging.
how much are these birds worth?
i think fostering is the way forward to help get numbers of finches etc, up. i have a pair of strawberries that produced loads of chicks this year but refused to raise them so i will take the eggs off them next year and put them under bengo's as the cock strawberry is a particularly nice sub-species.

Hello Matthew,
Thankfully the breeding pair I have are extremely prolific, I have two chicks from the first round, three from the second (would have been four, but one died shortly after fledging:sad: ) and possibly four young on this round.
I will be exchanging Birds with other breeders of Madagascans in Spring to give me and others unrelated Birds to breed from next year, I just hope my other pairs will be good parents so I won't need to go down the fostering route.
I agree though that fostering your Strawberry Finches next year would be the best move, best of luck for next year mate.

your welcome buddy,
email me a picture of them and ill post it - 00040168@ntu.ac.uk
i think i may break into more finches, manakins , etc as they are better suited at being mixed than weavers and fingers crossed my green singers will be successful too.
Thanks
Dave

Hi Dave,
So far I don't have any photos of my own Madagacan Mannikins, but I will try to find a link for you.
When I have Birds for sale, I will be asking for only £50pr and not £100+ some others are asking for these Birds.
Also the Japanese Waxwing on Bird Trek turned out to be a cock Bird,:-| but at least I have a contact e-mail address for the owner now, Carl Garnam.
