hi all

just thought i would give this new one a try,has anyone else got any youngsters that should not be here at this time of year,i had removed every scrap of nesting material along with the nests a few weeks ago but i went in the bird room yesterday and i have 7 chicks 3 in one and 4 in another and they have just laid eggs in the wood shavings that i always use at this time of year .i have done nothing different at all from other years but i cant seem to stop them breeding for some reason

hello Ken

thats strange, i thought the freezing weather would tell them that nows not a good time.

i had to un-expectards at the start of the year, all my birds were on the basice winter diet, no livefood, eggfood or owt like thatat a pair of strawberry finches decided to build a nest on the floor of the aviary (indoors) soley out of bostern fern leaves. they sat them for about 10 days after that i decided it would be wiser to stick the two eggs under t'bengalese they sat them for roughly a further 8 days hatched them out, after a whole 21 days the pair fledged, and the rest is history as they say.

hi matt

this is what i mean,i have cut back all the extras like greens ,eggfood and i was giving the quail a few mealworms which i am still doing cos they have laid loads of eggs and just play soccer with em .but i dont give condition seed even at this time of year.i was about to split them all up thats when i found the two nests i will be surprised if they survive as the whole reason why i didnt throw the eggs away in the first place was because of the cold weather i just thought they would get chilled and that would be it .how wrong was i

hi all
i have a new updated photo of my zebra and if you look closely it is now feathering up and its beak is growing, but it is really lazy its a right job trying to get it to eat as the bottom halfof its beak hits the food first and it cant grab it properly so i am mixing up some eggfood in crumbly form and leaving it in a heap so that it manages to get something.i know i will get there with it but its going to take longer than i thoughthttp://www.feathered-friends.co.uk/vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=228&stc=1&d=1133262111

hi matt
yeah i am pleased with its progress i just wish it would eat more on its own i know it can drink but it has a right job to get seed in between its daft beak

time will tell i spose whether the beak with ever grow enough to be able to crack seeds.

hi matt
i know its strong enough cos it has bitten my finger when i have been having a look at it but its got to work out how to roll it around in its beak to find the husk seam

hi matt
i am going to perform a surgical operation on it tommorow,i am going to file its bottom mandible down a bit to see wether it helps i can see the blood line in its beak as for some strange reason it is nearly transparent as you can see it is not brown like young zebs and it is not orangey red like an adult

Hi Kenny,

sorry to hear you've lost it mate:( was the culprit a pet cat or dog?

Chris

hi chris mate
it was my pet westie dog,he loves killing things the thing is i also have a border collie and she used to lick it if it was in my hand, the other one hated it with a passion i think it was more jealousy than anything else

Congratulations Ken,

I hope these Javas will make up for your lost Zebra Finch,;) one idea for you mate, why not try taming one of the Java chicks I've heard they make excellent Pet Birds.:D

I'm hoping to handrear one next year as a Pet.

hi paul
thanks mate, thats a good idea but i think i will have to try it outside in my bird shed as the zebra was raised in doors because of the problem with its beak, and another reason it would be raised outside is the bleeding dog cant get at my birds out there
