Hi Guys
my (or now it is being called our) second aviary is getting extended  Roger has decided that now he has 2 hens for his Yellow Mantled Whydah he wants to be able to give them plenty of space next year for breeding. He already has a pair of Weavers, but I think I have managed to persuade him that they will be better of seperated from the Whydahs. I guess they will have to go in with my Weavers...shame

Hi Ken
I do put rings on birds....problem is I forget to document them :?
We are going to order some next year with our initials on. Do you use split rings or closed?

hi laura
i get the plastic rings with numbers on,because i have the same sort of problem as you ,like your weavers you cant really get at them to close ring them and i like to leave my javas in the nest without rings as mine are a bit like canaries they chuck the bird out with the ring ,so i put the above on them as you can get different colours with inlaid numbers and you can attach them when they are fledged i think you can also get split metal rings with numbers on but i can find out for you

Hi Laura,
I think your best bet would be to ring your adult Birds using coloured plastic split rings and then do the same with the young from each pair after they have fledged to identify which pairs bred which young.
An example would be Jacarini Finch cock-orange ring paired to Jacarini Finch hen-red ring, resulting young rung with red and orange rings to identify the parents of red/orange young, or better still as Ken suggests numbered plastic split rings.
Plus when you do record anything regarding your breeding results, why not collect any pieces of paper you may have scribbled notes on and put all of the information onto the PC?
