Hi all
does anyone know if there is a training course dedicated to birds, their health and well being?

Hi Laura,
i know of one, i think it's called JC biology or JD biology... something like that. they do a course in ornithology that is the equivalent to an A-level. all work and research material is sent to your home and then i think you have to go somewhere to sit the exam. i'll find out the exact website address when i get home, it's not so much how to look after birds but rather how they work, basic genetics, organs, health, evolution etc.

hey all,
I have seen this before - we applied for it a few years ago before i started my course,
It costs £250 to do it.
Its a good thing if you can afford it, which i could not at the time.
Thanks

Hello Dave,
If you read through the link there is an option to pay for the course in Monthly instalments of £25 with an additional payment of £10, surely this is an offer that is too good to refuse?

Hi Laura/Paul/Dave,
i intend to take both the ornithology course, and icthyology course next year. i e-mailed the company a while back and they told me the qualification recieved is the equivalent to an A-level. hopefully if i can get these 2 under my belt and add that to the other 3 A-levels i will have next year then that should be enough to get me into a veterinary course.

I have never had an A level before, maybe this is my chance to learn something I am actually interested in :)

Hi Laura,
The answer should be yes, but I would be interesred in taking more than one course, which could end up in me paying £500 instead of the £250 I would have hoped to pay.
I will get back to you on which course/courses I will choose.
Luv Paul.
very good, i seen this a while back but lost the link. dunn i may do the ichology one as well in a few months
also cornwall college do a hnd in bird biology/foundation degree
Chris, iam so glad that ou are focused in your goals, some advice i would give is for you to check that the JCbiology diploma will be accepted by the institutes that you are planning to study at (vet), also if you can get as much voluntary work as you can prior to studying for to be a vet and if you can during the course. I would try local practises or possible wildlife hospitals etc... as ive found out experience is just as important as good qualifications, believe me it will help you in the end.
ive just found nother website which has a fw courses on http://www.neotericdesign.co.uk/compass1/index.php
maybe interesting for a few of you..
Chris, another possible course is this two day one here
http://www.sparsholt.ac.uk/schwww/anman/suvm.htm
looks good, good info covered
may be useful for you, spotted it as iam doing the sport fishery management two day course

Hello all,
Thanks for all of the links that have been provided so far, but does anyone know of any courses available that cater for all small Animals including Birds?
Ideally I would like to take on a course that covers Herps, Birds, Mammals and Fish, or am I asking for too much for a course that covers all of the above?
Paul.

Hi Paul,
i dont' know of a course that covers a wide range of animal species, only specifics such as herps, fish, birds on there own etc. the advantage of this however is that they will go into far more detail than just the one covering a bit of everything. looks like you might have to spend quite a bit if you want to try all those species mentioned:neutral: but i reckon it will be worth it

hi paul,
the idiot strikes again:lol:
i believe that the animal management course covers a variety of species. there are several colleges that do this course, which takes 2 years to complete. my friend Ash Alder who was registered on the original BB actually took this course for a while, but dropped out in the second year as ther is a lot of research work on computers.... and too many Chavs on the course!!
the course he took was a BTEC i think, which is equivalent to an A-level, but doesn't require brilliant grades to get on the course at GCSE

Hi Chris,
Thanks for the replies mate, both posts are a big help, all I have to do is decide whether to go for the quickest (but more expensive) option, or go for the whole package over a longer period?
Ash Alder, now theres a name that is a blast from the past, where did he go mate?
And Chris you really do have agreat way with words 'too many Chavs on the course!!' Good one mate.
Also I'm pleased you mentioned that the Animal Mangement course is possible with low grades at GCSE level, but I don't remember telling you how bad my grade results were.:-?
I'm a bit worried that a course over two years will interfere with the three jobs I have now, Brain Surgeon, Rocket Scientist and Astronaut.
Paul.

Hi Paul,
glad to be of help mate!
Ash Alder, well i think karl's constant revamping of BB and moving servers, requiring members to re-register put Ash off in the end. god know's i've tried to get him to register on here but without any luck! he's had a few illnesses over the past few years that have mean't he's had loads of time off school and college. unfortunately somewhere along the line he stopped going out places and now never leaves the house. the lad has a lot of problems with illness and confidence, i do pop by from time to time to check up on him and speak on MSN regularly. hopefully one day he'll recover.
funny thing is he still hasn't bred any birds in 2 years, talk about bad luck or what! zebbies that kill there chicks, cut throats that abandon nest, CPQ that don't know how to feed themselves after hatching. hopefully i can persuade him to have a few of my parent reared birds, and get rid of his incubator bred CPQ. may also be able to sort him out with a few free canaries in a month or so for next year.
mind you, he doesn't take my advise half the time anyway:lol:

hello Paul
the college where i went to for 2 years did animal management it was like Chris said BTEC, and i believe you come out of it with a Diploma that is equivalent to 3 A-levels, and hes right in saying anyone can get on it just about. they do is that you need grade C or abouve for maths and that, but if you dint you could still get on the course.
it would probabily take allot of your time up though, depends where you work really.
though what i've seen of it you would be wasted in that course, you would be better doing a higher course as this course was full of teenagers messing around, and special needs as well. i wasn't on that particular course, but these were my observations anyway.

hey guys,
Thats odd! maybe my place is slightly different as mine is now called Animal management 2years - at brakenhurst, which is part of Nottingham Trent University.
Well anyway the entry requirements are - 4 C's or above in ideally maths and science and englishs. which i aced lol
So anyway and i come out with a National Diploma equivalent to 4 A levels i think.
Well im on my 2nd year now and start back on the 10th.
Any more info just ask?
Btw it covers all animals - dometic & some wild in wild, in captivity , how to care for em , the diversity and where they come from e.g. background on how they become captive.
Erm welfare issues on various things.
handling a range of animals.
they do a specific fish module you can opt for in the 2nd year or if you wanted could do microbiology.
Thanks
Dave

Hello Chris, Matthew and Dave,
Chris,
That is bad news on Ash Alder, if you don't think he would mind (please run it by him first) could you please put me in contact with him?
Matthew,
Thank you for your comments on what you know of the course, I'm glad that I can still apply for such a course.
Dave,
Thanks for the information on the course you are taking at the moment, there is hope for me after all!

Chris I think its now time you moved on.
I am getting seriously annoyed with the digs.
Ash Alder, well i think karl's constant revamping of BB and moving servers, requiring members to re-register put Ash off in the end.

Hi Karl,
i wasn't taking a dig! you had a lot of problems with the original BB and i remember i had to re-register at least 3/4 times in the space of 6 months. Ash isn't as patient as i am and the fact is he didn't want to keep re-registering! i' not taking a dig, just stating a fact and i'm sorry if you don't like it
Chris
anyonefind my info interesting, and helpful..........???????????????

Hi Gary,
the animal manegment course looks interesting, however people i know who went on that course soon became very bored as a lot of the work involved is just doing researchon computers. i'll probably stick to the icthyology course and ornithology course which i should take around this time next year.
Chris:wink:
yeah Chris, what do you think of NPTC Certificate of Competence in the Safe Use of Veterinary Medicines, i thought that would be handy for yourself??????
i dont think i mentioned an animal management course

Hi Gary,
there's an animal management course on one of the links posted previously, i thought you'd posted it but i could be wrong. the NPTC Certificate sounds very interesting and it would definately help with applying to a veterinary college i'll look into it as i must have missed it previously.
thanks, Chris:wink:
thought it would be up your street, believe me anything like this will help you, a good price as well.
