I have a young Bengalese in my aviary. He/she is being well looked after by the adults but doesn't seem to have the power to fly far or high. It has become very friendly and will sit on my shoulder whilst I am going about my duties inside the flight.
It has given me a scare on more than one occasion as it sleeps laying down, and gives the appearance of being dead. When it is awake it is fine :)
Has anyone elsa had a bird like this before?

hi laura
we have had this problem before has this bird been in a cage or nest for a long time before it has ventured out,if it has then it needs to grow some muscle first bfore it can make it in one go i have had birds that have flown out in to the aviary and then found they cannot make that long journey back to the nest through the lack of feathers and the strength to fly upwards.i have young zeb that spends most of its time on the floor near the quail keeping warm as it cannot get back up to the pop hole so everyday i have to go in and lift it up so it dosent get a chill the parents are still feeding it but it is down there on the soft floor and enjoying it .so the question is is yours the same and is your aviary floor soft as that would be the reason for it sleeping lying down.just make sure it doesnt get chilled and once it gets the strength in its wings it should be up there with the rest of them

Hi Kenny
funny you should say that, I never gave it a thought before, but the little one was in the nest longer than you would expect. He is an 'only' chick so I guess he was spoilt and became lazy :?

Hi Laura,
When you say the Bengalese chick is lying down, is it lying as it would when in the nest?
Maybe if it was the only chick in the brood it may be a simple case of being over fed? But if this continues for a few days there may be something seriously wrong with the chick.
Please keep us updated.
