Hi all,
I know some of you think that Cage and Aviary Birds is failing the Hobby of Birdkeeping these days, I know I do.
But do you think there is any call for an alternative to this publication apart from Birdkeeper Magazine?
If so would you be interested in it at all and would you back it, considering the fact that Cage and Aviary seem to be on side with the people who are very much against us as Birdkeepers.
I think it is way overdue for competition for a new Paper/Magazine, what are your views?

hi paul
i think you are absoloutly right there sometimes when i have been in the newsagent i have flicked through it and found some interesting stuff but the price of £1-25 for a few pages is just ridiculous only as far back as 10 years ago it used to be full of info about birds and 3 times as thick as it is now,the adverts were all confined to the back and they didnt have to offer emp as an incentive to get people to write in now there are a couyple of articles and next to nothing else but adverts and they are one of the only papers who do not have a website .if they did have one no one would read the paper,i have seen one other called birds or some such but most od that is parrot related so if you aint got parrots you are stuffed, but i think there is time for a rethink on how they should fill them .like they used to with all different views of different birds there used to be canaries in there as well as every different type of finch i learnt a lot in my early years of bird keeping buy reading it .i think there is a problem which has been discussed bsfore there is not enough new people coming in to the hobby mostly because the pet shops have stopped selling birds only the big places that people cant get to,and i am not saying there are not enough young people as there are alot of people who have discovered this great hobby of ours later in life, they need a new paper where they can find a breeder just by looking in the paper as most of the people dont advertise locally because they dont want their bird room broken in to,but the big crux of the matter is these forums i am afraid people dont need to read apaper or mag now to get info....photos........and........most of all first hand info from the people themselves, how many times have you gone to buy birds from somone and stood there for an hour or two soaking up the info from the breeder Q.E.D. so paul after all that rambling it will have to be a good one i am all for it but it will need some careful thought to go into it.are you thinking of starting one up mate

Hi Paul,
i'm all for the idea, C&A has had the monopoly on bird magazines in this country for far too long, it's about time there was some competition. who knows with increased competition they would be forced to improve their paper to maintain sales.... meaning it might revert back to the good old days which i never knew.
we could probably do a trial paper/Magazine through this forum, each of us writes an article or two and submits it. then one of us could put it together as one document and print it off as a newspaper. to launch it we could always sell a few or give them away at stafford or a similar show, or bird clubs etc etc.

there is actually a competitior to cage and aviary birds, thats is in process of being set up, or it could have gone to print, i cannot remember now, as Colin Courtney, who is in contact with the editor (i think) and have asked me to contribe to the artcle, anyway i shall post further details as soon as i know the, i am expecting to be put in contact shortly.

Hello all,
I'm sorry for bodging the header to the thread.
Hi Ken,
I'm afraid I'm no position to take on such a huge task as this, I just wondered if such a publication was to come along would Birdkeepers entertain the idea, rather than as you say use the Internet and ignore Bird Papers and Magazines?;)
Hi Chris,
If there ever was a decent Bird Paper or Magazine to go into competition with C&A, I think it would sink C&A rather than force them to improve on the poor quality we are offered lately.
I know I have changed my tune from the past in asking people to contribute articles rather than complain of the poor content, but my latest gripe is that lately they (IPC Media) are publishing far too many articles from the RSPCA, their Sister Organisation Animal Aid and the Village Idiot known as Greg Glendell.
My major complaint with C&A is that they (IPC) see fit to run this publication using people who are highly qualified in publishing etc, but don't have half a clue about the subject of Birds at all.
They are writing in exactly the same way as any Local or National Newspaper would, bad news is good news, they are over hyping the Bird Flu situation as if it was written by the Animal Rights groups.
By the way Chris, I like your idea of producing a Bird Paper through the Forums and distributing it at the major Bird Sales, this could only help in boosting public awareness of the information available to Internet users, just don't include the arguments eh.
Hi Matthew,
Please let us know more when you hear of any news, this could be what we are waiting for.

Paul it was not long ago this same question came up in BBIA or maybe it was C-&-A not sure but I got the impression that there was a positive to it but it seems to be gone on the back burner for now, I would be in favour of a new paper if it covered most birds that people brred not jsut selective birds week on week. so yes I am for it with out the anti's. I like Chris's idea ;-)
As much as I enjoy using the PC to look up information, I also love to read books and magazines, therefore I would welcome a change.

Hello John,
It's great to see you here, I'm pleased you agree that C&A need some serious competition and that they seem to be supporting the very people who are harming our hobby.
I agree that we need to kept imformed on what is going on regarding the Antis, but I don't see that we should be publisising their twisted views when they are not prepared to consider our views.
