Hi all,

if anyone has any suggestions for the new anti anti forum/pro pet keeping forum then please place your suggestions in this topic, as the other thread may well be undergoing some 'redecorating' soon and could be closed shortly when a decision is made.

i like the name :

Fight for the Right for pets, which Paul has put forward on the previous thread.

we could also have : those damn AR! , i really am stuck for names (as you can tell by my suggestion<!)

Hello.
At the risk of sounding like an anorak here, a suggestion ….

Would an acronym / abbreviation be acceptable ?

I would suggest a domain name shouldn’t be to long, peeps may not type it in , or when telling someone may forget the web address :)

just an example :
PORC : Pet Owners Rights Community ( ok that ones gone anyhow ) and wasnt great :)

TPPF : The Pets Protection Forum.

A-R-K.co.uk : Animal Rights Kommunity (ok spelling wrong but for web today its acceptable)

Just a thought , i probably just made things worse lol

Hi Carl

I agree, I had the same problem as you know, picking a name for this site; although I wasn't convinced at the time that I had made the right choice, but as time has gone on, it was the best choice I have ever made!

This is all due to the community that IS, Feathered-Friends:razz:

Hi All, sorry I am a bit late tonight, couldn't get away from work:???:

In my own opinion, I love my birds and all my other pets including dogs, ferrets, mice, rats etc. Although they are known as pets to anyone else, to me personally they are an extension to my family.

I do the best I can, with what I have got and I can honestly say that I would suffer before they ever would.

We all know that the antis' out there are also logging in to pet related sites and looking for ammunition to use against us; if they see unrest between us - we are only giving them the verbal bullets to fire back at us.

So I ask that we all to unite and do not give them the satisfaction of getting, yet, another one up on us!

Lets remain Feathered-Friends to the core, and continue the Fight-Back!

hello Chris,

i like the first two that Paul said, maybe they could for the domain name he abbreviated like Carl said,

i just think the first two sound really professional, and legitimate, but that my view of it anyway.

i too consider my birds more than just pets, but part of a captive breeding programme, and to educate and show people some of the wonderful creatures that we have oot there in the world.

Right chris , you needing a forum brought me back to something i have been looking into doing for a while now , i need to set something up and do a little testing to make sure i know what i am doing and also to check it works ok...

but in the next few days i can ( I HOPE ) set you up with a free forum on this server...
its using the free phpbb forum like you used before..

Its going to be up to you, theres no catch other than because its free there will later be advertising on the top and bottom , i intend this to be unintrusive however...

The plan is to offer free forums to anyone that wants them , the cost being paid for by advertising ( thats the plan )

I will let you know more when tested but if all goes well the most you need is a domain name..

Kind Regards
Carl

Hi Carl,

that sounds great! , i'm not bothered with advertisements on a forum/website etc, as long as they aren't the pop up kind! as i know those have put me off quite a few Guitar tab sites lol.

anyway, i like the idea of abbreviations for the domain name. PORC would have been a funny one, especially for an anti anti site.. as anti's are usually veggies/vegan.

Paul, those names you have come up with sound great, i like the first 2, 4th and last one on the list you have suggested. the pet's protection one sounds like an animal welfare kind of thing, which in itself isn't bad but it would probably attract AR far more rapidly:neutral:

keep em coming, and i'll get the poll going over the next few days

Thanks for all your help!

Hi Carl and Chris,

First of all Carl, what protection is available on a free Website, would it be anywhere near as good as paid one,
I assume you realise why I ask?

Chris, I have tried coming up with more ideas, it seems that the more ideal name is one that can easily be remembered by abreviating, I must say I agree but I can't come up with anything without sounding Anti:eek:.

I will keep trying though mate, in the mean time, come on people please try to come up with something better than my attempts.

Hi Carl and Chris,

First of all Carl, what protection is available on a free Website, would it be anywhere near as good as paid one,

I assume you realise why I ask?

Hello Paul.

I hope all is well.

well...I see there are many free forum hosts out there and i cant vouch for "Free Forum Hosting" in general and i will be honest its been an idea of mine to set something like this up for some time now.

I will be setting up a free forum system , actually its up and running now , i am just testing it.

the free hosting i have in mind will be run by myself , i will be taking backups and will be running the system on the same server as feathered friends so uptime should be just fine, but things can always go wrong with any system from time to time...

If its a free forum then something needs to pay for the outgoings here , this can only really be achieved by advertising, i will at this time not use pop ups , only banner ads such as on this forum.

If its paid hosting then for example chris would have his own account and a completely separate forum under his own domain name , also no advertising if he wishes other than his own chosen ads.

Security issues....

No set up is hacker proof these days , only steps to help security , it seems theres a line between server function/speed and server security. Feathered friends uses a VBulletin forum system costing around £82 i think now, even Vbullitin can be hacked if things are not right but i would advise anyone wanting to set up a forum to think about investing in this software.

If i could use Vbulletin as a free forum i would , but it would cost me £2700 for 50 free forums to give away.

So free forum systems on the whole use what’s called phpbb released under the gpl licence for free , this is why i can set up unlimited forums for free as long as the advertising revenue generated eventually pays for the web space used..

because phpbb is free its widely used and at much more risk of being hacked if someone decides to do so .

What it does allow however is someone to set up a forum with no risk to assess the posible interest they will have , then later they can either move to their own account with phpbb or even buy Vbulletin .

Cheers m8.

Kind Regards
Carl

The Protection Of Animal Keeping Association/Society/Federation/Group Forum.

The Pets Protection Forum.

The Animals In Captivity Forum.

Save Our Pets Forum.

Protect Our Pets Forum.

Pets Are Educational Forum.

Stop The Ar Forum.

TPPF : The Pets Protection Forum.

A-R-K.co.uk : Animal Rights Kommunity

P.O.P.S protect our pets site

Pro-AKS = Pro Animal Keeping Society

ANCAP.CO.UK : ANimals in CAPtivity forum

BAORG British Animal Owners Rights Group

B.O.A.R.S british owners animal rights society

B.A.R.K. britsih animal rights klub

I think this is enough to use, and there are plenty of good un's in there. if everyone else agrees i will start a poll Via PM. this can be done in one of 2 ways, i can PM everyone with the list asking for them to pick out one and PM it back........ OR those who wish to vote can look at the list presented on here, choose one and PM it to me.

let me know which way is best and i'll get started tomorrow

hi chris

i think the p m to you would be better as all the people all of the time are not logged on so it could take a while to collect if you p m them ........just a thought either way would be good as long as you get all the members to vote

Hello Carl,

Thanks for the reply, I understand that for a free Site/Forum to work out that this would need funding in some way, would this be possible if the Owner was to choose the related advertising needed to fund the running of the Site/Forum?

If so how much per year would you need?

Hi,

i think it would actually be easier if we run the poll on the forum, rather than by PM as it's going to take forever for me to PM everyone (don't know a quick way of doing it). i'll see if i can start a poll, anyone who wanted to buy all the domain names will be out of pocket very quickley:razz:

hello chris.
i have a new forum section available.

Its still in the experimental stages.......

it can be found here : http://www.tkforums.co.uk

to start with and to keep your costs down you could decide not to have a domain name.

this would meen however if your forum was called "fightback" you would need to give out this address :
http://www.tkforums.co.uk/phpbb/?mforum=fightback

i could also set up this for your domain name:
http://fightback.tkforums.co.uk
or
http://www.tkforums.co.uk/fightback/

later you could choose a propper domain name and i would direct it to the correct location.

also this would allow you to get started on the forum even if your not sure of what domain name you were after.

Kind Regards
Carl

Hi Carl,

thanks for that, i was going to ask about the domain name as it is a tad on the long side at the moment:

http://www.tkforums.co.uk/phpbb/index.php?sid=410ecfbcc5ef86c2b1b3c0bb4d6ed282&mforum=stopthear

then again, maybe i copied it wrongly:lol:

i think i may be able to get a domain name sorted, i will let you know if and when i do. thanks for your help i don't think i would ever have been able to do this without you

cheers, Chris;)

no problem :)

the link you gave also included the session details and sometimes this then does not work.

when you enter the forum details are stored in the session information .

so if you use the link i PM you then all should be fine.
