Advice Please!

I have been interested in mum's birds for some time now, and now thinking of keeping birds myself. What would be the best breed for me to start out with?
Unfortunately I have not got an avairy of my own, so I think I may have to commandeer part of mum's avairy. She has a mixture of Foreign Finches and Waxbills.
