Hi mate,

i believe that cock goldfinches have a larger red patch on the face than that of a hen. and i'm not certain, but cocks sing and hens don't. as i don't keep goldfinches i can't give a definate answer, but this is what i have been led to believe

Hi Axelrod,

With cock Goldfinches their red blaze extends beyond the eye, the blaze of the hen finishes before the eye and is far less intense in colour.

at what age would goldfinches be to tell the sexes apart.

and is it down to the honesty of the breeder to tell you if a cock and hen are related or not.

I bought a goldfinch last march in the belief it is a cock. It's mask is red up to the eye but it as never sang. I have also heard that the wing butts differ between cock and hen.Can anyone confirm this

Hi Mike,

Welcome to the forum!!!

The males should have more black on the wings, while the females will be more of a darkish grey.
