Hi all,
I have a pair of zebras sitting on six eggs, the third egg was laid last Sunday, so i presume they will start hatching next sunday, i am going on holiiday the following Thursday and need to get them to my farther in laws, i can take them in the treble breeding cage they are in.
when would be the best time to move them ?
Thanks in advance
Jimmy :-?

hi jimmy
i dont think any time would be good as the chances are they may just abandon them but if you are going to move them i suggest that you cover the front of the breeder first before you attempt to move them as they will start to move about when you move the cage and they could damage the eggs or even knock them out of the nest.if it is only a short journey i would suggest putting a slider in to seperate the birds from the nest ,the ideal situation would be if your father in law had some bengalese so you could just take the eggs to him.i just wish you the best of luck in taking them and hope that the zebs are good parents and should sit them when you get them there ,whats wrong with your father in law coming to your house to feed them etc.

hi ken,
I can't rely on him to keep coming around.
The eggs are in the canary nest pan, i could remove this when i move the birds and take them down together, will take me about 10 minutes to get there.
cheers

Hi Jimmy,
I agree with Ken if you move the Birds they will only desert the eggs you have, your best bet would be to foster them to other Zebra Finches or Bengalese Finches.
If this is not possible, I'm afraiad you may as well bin the eggs and hope they will lay again after your return.
Paul.

Cheers paul & kenny,
i have nothing to foster them with so i will have to move them and take a chance.
i'll have to try and plan it better next time.

i hope they survive m8,
thats the problem with holidays, i haven't been on one for 4 years now, i'm ready for a rest but have got no one reliable in my local area any more. the best time to go i spose is in winter time, when, nowt is breeding, and you don't have to worry about opening and closing doors.

hi matt,
i only get away for a weekend and my son puts the eggfood in that i have already prepared, and i top up my hoppers and drinkers and hope they last for 2 days as that is all i dare to go away for,the last time i went on a holiday for a week i was 30 and the longest i go for now is sat -sun and home again.

thats it, i suppose if you've got a hobby as intensive as bird keeping then you have 2 choices, 1 go away and expect casualties, or 2 don't go away at all, for longer that 2 days.

Hi all,
I agree if you are a serious Birdkeeper then Holidays are just a faded memory, the last proper Holidays I had were in my late Teens and even then they were at The World Shows.
Those were the days, a few days in Switzerland, Holland or even what used to be Yugoslavia, a few days out looking at boring stuff (like windmills or cheese factories), great stuff like The National Park in Split (of the former Yugoslavia) the most beautiful place I have ever visited and a day or two at The World Show looking at 20,000 plus Birds under one roof.:D Birdkeeper Heaven!
During the day/s at the Show I saw Birds I may never see again, such as Gouldian X Pin-Tailed Nonpariels shown in teams of four with several teams on show, a single Horned Parrakeet Phooaaarrrr!!!
Birds I saw for the first time, such as Mountain and Sierra Parakeets, Caucasian Great Rose Finch, Azure Tit, Pine Grosbeak, Mutation Pearl Headed Silverbills etc.
Birds I saw for the first time and never identified and probably never will, and every night on the Beer with a Coach load of people from all over the U.K. who share a great interest in Birds.
But each time I arrived back in the U.K. as my Olds collected me from London I would ask the same question, which Bird died when I was away?
My biggest shock was the answer of Birds! (rather than Bird:|), I had a Blue Faced Parrotfinch indoors on medication before I left home, my Mother told me the Blue Faced Parrotfinch had died along with my beloved Indigo Bunting cock:shock:, when I returned home I saw the Blue Faced Parrotfinch in his cage in the Living room, the Bird that had died was his mate who was perfectly healthy in the Birdroom when I left for my Holiday.
My view is if you keep Birds, kiss goodbye to Holidays.
Paul.

hi paul
i am afraid it is totally out of the question for me to go anywhere like that even stafford.as i am not allowed to travel on public transport since my operations and i cant travel very far in a car either so some people are extremely lucky that they can get to these places i admit that when i was younger i went the national regularly with my father in law and have some great memories not just the birds the people as well some great characters there my freind as you probably know

You've all got me feeling guilty now about going on holiday
Trouble is with a ten year old son and a wife who thinks looking tanned is a must, i don't have a lot of say in it.
This is my first year in keeping birds and to be honest i never gave holidays a thought, i'll have to plan it better next year
