Hi one and all
If you were able to build a new bird room and had a budget that would allow you to get what you would like with out going over board WHAT WOULD YOU BUILD?
Rembering your climate you live in / the approval of the boss had been given / and your garden was of good size enough to eliminate the bits you will not have time to maintain. JUST DREAM A LITTLE. and put it in words and forward planning sometimes comes to life.

Hi Allan,
I will post my ideal Birdroom requirements as soon as I have mapped out exactly what I need from such a structure.

Hi one and all
Hi paul
In the past we have built a few different types of structors as birdrooms ,while living in the UK our last project was of 13 outside avairys joined with a wired walk way with breeding rooms at either end .A sort of u shape with fountains in some flights and cages for about 30 pairs, nice set up, and the avairys were covered so all birds could stay out all winter.
The set we are building in Canada we had to consider the weather winter to -40 and summer to +100 can be normal for us. So we first had to put in a cement floor with in-floor heat a little expencive but I do not intend to get cold either . It will only be run a a tempature that is comfortable cool in the winter. In the summer we have 4 roof sky light that open and a extractor system simular to a greenhouse that will come on if the tempature is to high. The out door flights are conected to the main building and will be used mostly in the fine days. As you may notice that this structure is being built at the moment prior to getting the birds, the total roof area is 24' x 26' may seem a little large but part of the building will at the beginning be used for storage until enough bird can be found.
I will post pics soon as we proceed along with the building.

Hi Alan,
The two setups you describe both sound great, I look forward to seeing your new project during and after construction.
I still need some time to consider how to situate all I would need to include in my 'Perfect Setup', I'm still trying to figure out where to put the Beer fridge, extractor fan (Malboro smoker:roll: ), PC (of course), Sound System, TV, DVD/Video Player, Split Screen Monitors for the Cameras on some of the Cages and Aviaries and Book case with reference Bird Books etc. Come to think of it I may as well find somewhere for a bed:|.
Then there are of course the Birds to consider, Planted and non Planted Aviaries, Cage Blocks, Hospital Room, Quarantine Room, Bird Food fridge and freezer, Food Preperation area, Running Water and drainage system, Air Conditioning system and Humidity control tailored for each area (depending on the Species for each section).
I will post more if I have forgotten anything, but I may end up posting two setups, one with the affordable budget you mentioned, and another for when I win the ever elusive Lottery Jackpot.

Hi one and all
Hi Paul. Are we ever happy with the lay out of our bird rooms and do we expand into the space we have.
The first is a NO and the second is a YES.
We have already started to plan our Dream Bird area for our next time we build a house again, this may be only a dream but if we build again it will become a reality.
Just think a bird area that is part of the building of your bungalow, size about 30' x30' or larger attached to the house with the centre area a inside garden with a dome roof vented of course with plants so you can sit and view the inside flights while relaxing, a seperate fridge not for the live food ,but another for the cool drinks and the sound of flowing water from a cascade with in one of the flights , tropical misters in the flights to cool the birds and plenty of natural light, from one wall being opening glass doors on to a outside deck with avairys attached and a view over a lake and plenty of trees and wilderness.
OH yes some one else to keep it all clean aswell.
We are at present putting together a web site where we will be displaying pics of the old bird room set up and the new one being built with pics of the birds . OH yes we will also be attaching pics of our visits to the bird places we are visiting on our travels this will not then clutter up the forum with pics.
The new building is as of today Sunday roof tight with windows and most of the doors in also the covered areas for two of the 4 out door flights finished, flights still need floors before they can be completed.

Hi one and all
By the way the size 30' x30' was only the bird part ,bungalow would be extra about 30' x 65 ' in total size
at present our two story building is 30' x40' with a bird room when complete 24' x 26' including the outside flights so about the same size.

Hi all,
now i've had a little time to think over this, and more experience than i had last time i posted about something like this, here we go:
a 30' flight containing various bamboos, miscanthus grasses, ornamental grasses, pampass grass, lots of banana palnts, canary island date palms, birds nest ferns, maidenhair ferns, buddleia, russian vine, various passiflora, clematis, hops, millets (live and growin, not dried). the floorings would consist of a deep alyer of gravel covered with an equally deep layer of compost and topped off with bark chippings, there would also be and area sectioned off to contain silver sand as a bath for various Quail. there would still be the pond idea with a waterfall and shallow fast running stream, this would contain a few fish and would be heated.
the aviary itself would be mesh on the inside and glass on the outside with computer controlled windows, lightings, fans and heaters and a thremostat. this would maintain ideal conditions for the birds. also nearly forgot a computer controlled sprinkler system (this would be mounted on the roof) to create artificial rainfall and manipulate the seasons.
this aviary would contain wild-type CPQ (parent rearing ofcourse),a pair of mandarin ducks, pin tailed Whydahs, St Helena waxbills, lesser masked weavers and greensingers.
i wouldn't stop there, but i'll post another aviary another day
Chris ;)

Hi,
the cages i would use in an ideal setup would be 4' long, 18" tall and 18" deep (double breeders) for the smaller birds such as greensingers and canaries. the larger cages would be 6' long double breeders, 2' tall and 2' deep. these would contain a red heatlamp conected to a dimmerstat to provide heat for the more fragile birds. there would also be 2 flouresent tube per cage located at the centre near the front. these would be linked to timers so that one comes on at say 6am and the second turns on at 11 am, which would then turn off at 3pm and the first at 9pm. this would stimulate midday where the light intensity would be at it's maximum, the hours would change to suit the time of year and to mimic the seasons.
each cage would contain live plants where necessary for breeding, such as passion flowers and grasses to proived cover and possible nest sites.
the birdroom itself would have an extractor fan to keep the room dust free and well ventilated, and air conditioning to cool down the birdroom in summer months should it get too hot.
again, more to come but all in good time, Chris:wink:
