Hi laura,

good luck with them, provided there isn't any rain to get them wet they should all grow up fine. if you know of any red/yellow ant nests in your garden now would be a good time to raid them as the mother will call all the chicks to come and eat them.

good luck, Chris:wink:

Hi all,

pictures could be difficult at the moment as they seem to like hiding a great deal. Last night as it was getting dark I popped out to check up on the aviary and all the quail were in their nest, babies at the bottom, mum on top and dad on top of them all! I couldn't believe how wide he can spread his body in order to cover them all:smile: They really are fantastic parents........just a shame no one wants the babies:?

Chris, I was gardening at the weekend and found a red ants nest, so I fed them to the quail yesterday:-P

Hi all,

i don't wish to tempt fate, but i have had 2 hen CPQ sitting on the same nest:neutral: for the past 18 days tommorrow, so i reckon it's hatching day for them tommorrow. the funny thing is that while the one hen had nested and laid 8 brown eggs, the other started laiing in the same nest so now there's a fair few eggs in there, 8 of which are due to hatch any time now, and the others i'll pop into an incubator to hatch one by one each day, these chicks will be returned to their mother and hopefully all should go well

Chris:grin:

Nothing yet, but i've known em take a week longer than they should before now!

fingers crossed anyway

Good luck Chris.

Out of the 9 of mine that recently hatched I only have 2 left! I have no idea why the others haven't survived as they all seemed very strong and healthy :?

babies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i don't know how many, but i can see shells all over the place, can hear quite a few of them and have seen one nice bright yellow chick (silver)!!! pitty it's windy and wet, but the chicks are all dry which is the important thing. this in an inexperienced hen so i don't know what to expect from her, if it counts her mother was great at rearing chicks so let's hope it got passed on!

Laura, the only thing that i can think of for you losing chicks would be if they got damp, cold, first time???, or the hen may have crush a few as mine does that sometimes.

Chris:wink:

laurab
08-24-2005, 10:44 AM
Congratulations Chris

I am sure they weren't crushed as they had got to a fair size. The aviary is very dry, the weather here (until today) has been lovely. Just one of those things I guess :?

congrats chris i am very proud. it is hard to get quail to hatch and rear their own young and is a dissapointing and sadddening task when it goes wrong. wishing you all the best and hope they grow to be beauties.

Hi all,

we have 6 chicks, 3 silvers and 3 pearls. unfortunately no normals have poped up this time for my breeding program, but there's still plenty of time and another hen yet!

Chris:grin:

Waxbillman
08-24-2005, 03:53 PM
that in a way is a shame, like i say sods law, at least you will be breeding birds that may very well parent rear.

matthew

chris
08-24-2005, 04:04 PM
Hi matthew,

like you said sod's law, i wasn't suprised! they have produced normals before so the genetics are definately there, it's just a metter of luck whether they will pop up again.

if they don't i have a plan B:wink:

Chris:wink:

Waxbillman
08-24-2005, 05:59 PM
great, what is plan b then?

matthew

chris
08-24-2005, 07:05 PM
plan B:

buy a normal cock bird:lol: , the hen's have part of the genentic information to produce normals as they produced one last year, by introducing a normal mutation cock bird i increase the chances of producing normal chicks. well something like that anyway

then there's always plan C:lol:

Chris:wink:

well, good luck chris

i'm sure it'll work.

Hi all,

sadly i've already lost 2 chicks:sad: , the first one i assume was cruched by the mother (i've lost a few to this in the past), the second one however was more concerning. i spotted it lying on it's back with it's feet waving in the air, the cock then run over to have a peck at it so i run into the aviary and placed it in the ncubator after giving it some water. when i went back to check on it, it had picked up a bit so i took it inside with me to give it some honey water for an energy boost, however before i had the chance to give it the mix it had some sort of fit, stretched it's legs right out and died:neutral:

my initial concern is that they are/were not getting enough food and water, but fortunately this morining i have caught them all having a drink, and the mother is always taking them to food aswell as catching her own!

i hope the remaining 4 survive, now left with 2 silvers and 2 pearls and i will try to get some photos later in the day (watch this space, i bet i forget.........)

hi laura

its a great shame that cpq dont seem to like rearing their own young for some reason

ken

chris
08-28-2005, 01:31 PM
well here are a few photos, the only problem is they are all brooding up in the hen's feathers, and the brown chicks don't show up much at all on the bark chipping so good luck spotting the one in there! you won't see all 4 at once as they didn't want to come out to play, they did show up for the video i've taken but working out how to get that onto my PC is something else:neutral: !

Chris

chris
08-28-2005, 04:12 PM
 i've figured out how to upload the video to my PC, anyone who wants to view my aviary inside, outside, and inside the birdroom let me know and i'll see if i can e-mail it to you. the program it is on is "image mixer", i will see if it works also on windows media player as that would make things easier. the video is about 30 mins long!! and it's a pretty big file i think so i may not be able to e-mail it yet we will see

Hi Chris and Laura,

It is sad news on the CPQ, I hope your remaining chicks survive, Chris the fit you described has happened to my Red Crested and Jacarini Finch chicks in the past, the reason still remains a mystery.:-|

Laura the loss of your chicks is even more of a mystery, especially as you managed to rear 8 on the last round, I hope the single chick survives.

Fingers crossed for both of you, Paul.

Hi again,

the remaining 4 chicks all seem to be doing fine, they now have there pin feathers starting to appear on the wings. i've been back out with the camera:-) you can see these a bit better now, but they just don't want to stay still:grin:

Chris:wink:

chris

Hi again,

one of the other hen's has now started laying again, and her and the cock have been draging up coconut fibre to build a bit of a nest, so finger's crossed this could be the second round of the year:grin:

the 4 chicks are doing great and are showing there wing feathers now along with a few body feathers, definately 2 pearl's and 2 silver's so i wasn't that rusty with identifying the chicks

Laura, what colours did your CPQ chicks turn out to be in the end?

Chris:wink:

Hi Matthew,

from this particular Pair i have bred the following mutations so far:
Silver Normals, Silver Pearls (without masks), Blue Pearls (without mask), Normal Pearls (normal colour, but with the Pearl type feathers), Normal Normals:neutral:

i'm sure i can't be giving all these the right names, but i know what i mean anyway:lol:

Chris

Hi Chris,

I think I know what you mean mate:grin:, except the Silver Pearls may be Silver Blue Pearls if the cocks do not show the throat markings.

I would have posted the list as,

Silver,
Silver Blue Pearl,
Blue Pearl,
Pearl,
Normal.

Paul.

Hi Paul,

thanks for that mate, that will make identifying the CPQ i breed much easier from now on

hey all,

My 3 chicks i hatched - are a silver, silver-pied & i think a normal.

As the 1st is all silver but it has like scalloping on its feathers, 2nd is silver with white wings but has same scalloping as the 1st on the silver part.

And the 3rd is brown with darker scalloping to feathers - me thinks its a hen!

Good luck laura & chris!

Thanks

hi dave

you usualy find this scalloping on silvers or greys in most birds so looks like you will be correct in your assumption about the silvers

hi all

i suppose you all know that the reason why baby quail do not take food straight away is that before they hatch they absorb what is left of the inside of the egg which lasts them a full 3 days after hatching
