I recently removed a young Hecks from my main aviary as I was worried the cold would kill it as it had not had it's 1st moult. Sadly 3 days after moving it to my indoor flight it died! I had seen it eating, and there was no sign it had been attacked by another bird.
Any suggestions as to why this happened?

Hello Laura,
I'm sorry you lost your Hecks Grassfinch, the only explanation I can come up with is shock due to the move.
I provide all of my Birds with Pro-Biotics whenever I move them from one place to another even if it is for a couple of days.
If I move Birds from inside to outside quarters or vice versa I add Pro-Biotics to the drinking water, I do the same if I buy new Birds I provide them with Pro-Biotics for at least a week.
Paul.

Thanks Paul, I must admit I don't administer pro-biotics for that legnth of time, purely because i didn't know I could. DOH! :x

Hi Laura,
Most people only give Pro-Biotics after a course of Anti-Biotics, I give my Birds Pro-Biotics as a matter of course after buying, showing etc.
It works for me I have noticed far less losses since introducing Pro-Biotics after buying any Birds.

hello,
i,m sorry to say i lost my best fife cock last week. He appeared to suffer some kind of stroke although he was an 04 bird, he's the one i told you about who was the egg pecker, remember? any way when i picked him up to warm him, he had a grey mite crawling thru his feathers.. could this have caused his demise. I've since noticed that the glocester corona who i reported to you was fat and lazy also has these little critters in her feathers. what can i treat the birds with that wont cause sickness to those rearing young. some birds are scratching but not unduly. any ideas? all advice is greatly received
success with the zebras ( yes i know they're breeding machines) but this set has laid and hatched a clutch of 8 and they're all fledgelings now brill eh? and the silver bills have ousted 1 fledgeling, pretty little thing he is too and so tame, he lands on my head when i enter the aviary. look forward to any replies,
thanks
sue

Hi sue,
i think matthew has beat me to it on another post, recommending the use of moxedectin. if you can't get hold of it try both johnson's anti mite spray, and rid mite powder. the spray can be used on the birds, and i also use it to kill anything in the cages.
i hope you get rid of the little blighters, if you do use the spray and mite powder it may take a month or so to completely remove them, but you will notice an improvement within a day or two. if the problem persists, please go and see a vet as we can only give so much advice on here (and i'm not a vet... yet:grin: )

sorry Chris!! didn't mean to but in on your field of expertise!!! lol,
good stuff though, it also treats internal parasites, such as worms and stuff, so if you have birds that have access to outdoor, planted avaried, very good stuff.

hi chris
do you think that they sound like feather mite,if so hippocroc could hold the bird up to the light and you can usually see the lines the mite have made in the feathers

hi thanks all. i also wrote to canary advisor.com they suggested the use of s76 in the bath water and scatt. they also sent a link to the sellers of this stuff and they're prepared to ship here. a bottle of each + shipping came to 56$ roughly 28 £. hope it works.
