View Full Version : That Darn Cat!

Someone in my neighbourhood owns a large black cat. At night time it comes alive. It has woken me up every night, actually morning at around 3.30 - 4am.

I hear a thud on my aviary roof as it jumps down off my shed roof, it then proceeds to walk the full legnth of my aviary roof. If I manage to scare it off it vanishes and does exactly the same again about 20 minutes later!

It is now really begining to pee me off, why don't owners of cats have to have the same responsibility for their animal as I have to have for my dogs?

Supposing it kills my birds in fright, would I be able to sue the owner for damages????

hello Laura,

at the risk of opening a can of worms again,
i suggest a good hard brick lobbed swiftly in the direction of the cat. lets not start an argument but i'm sure many people know my strong views on cats and their 'owners'

Hi laura,

maybe a sprinkler system could help, or a water pistol, or electric fence, or a dog outside, or lion manure (yeah, hard to get but it works!) a daft one, but maybe a cat? i know mine does a damn good job of keeping other cats out of the garden.... and doesn't bother the birds now he know's he'll get the water pistol treatment

Hi matthew, i'm going to have to dissagree with that. if ANYONE threw a brick at my cat or harmed it for what ever reason, they'd get my fist in there face or worse. that's someone's pet your hurting, the water pistol treatment works fine

I have 2 Jack Russells and they are tucked up in bed at that time. I am seriously thinking of putting our ferrets' on a long leash so that they can sort him out, as the cat also stands in front of their enclosure where they can see him, it drives them crazy.

Having lost many birds once before I am really woried it will happen again.

Hi laura,

the ferret treatment seems fair enough. it'd be the cat's own stupid fault for taking a few of those on. but would it be safe to leave the ferrets on a leash all night long?

hello Chris, like i said i don't want to offend anyone especially not you.

but thats my point exactly, its someone's pet in MY property, harming MY possesstions. and i don't think that sun shines out of cat's back-side enough to give them the right and privelidge to roam about anywhere they want as if they own the place, and yes ignore my advice laura, a water pistol is definatly going to cause less trouble. truth be told i never need to throw owt at the local moggies often, because all i have to do is look at them (i must be really ugly  ) if that doesn't work i shout at them and that gets the wind up them they scoot sharpish, i can be pretty evil and scarey when i want to be.

i also have a security light that picks up any movements, and usually wakes me up, so i instantly look out the window to see what the problems is. the cats usually tries to pass through my garden at around midnight.

Hello Laura,

I don't know where you can buy it, but there is a Plant that Cats hate to go anywhere near to, the only name I can remember is the P.Off Plant.

And no I'm not joking this Plant does exist, but I'm sorry to say I can't remember the Scientific name, I remember getting some advice on the Plant on the old BB and FF, but I think the information is now lost.

It might be an idea to post on one of these to ask if anyone can remember the correct name and where to find this Plant.

hello there, i can help you on that,

the plant your after it called the 'pee off plant' or the 'scaredy cat plant' it's a member of the coleus family, and yes its stinks so the cat hate it, make sure you put it where cats walk the most as the smell is only activated when the rub past it. they frow to about 30 or maybe even 45 cm in all.
they sell them at my plce for £1.59 or summut like that, thats with my dis-count.

I have come to realise that I am the only one getting stressed over 'that darn cat', when it walks over the top of the aviary it doesn't seem to bother the birds at all!!

Unlike the football that occasionally lands on the roof from the little brat next door and sends the birds into a panic!!
