Hi all, here's how to make it:

200g approximately you will need 2 eggs, 8 digestive biscuits (or 2 slices of bread and 4 biscuits), bogena intesive red, honey, hot water(not boiling)

scramble the eggs and cook in a microwave if you lazy like me, or hard boil but this takes 10 mins longer.
place the biscuits in a blender and turn em to crumbs:grin: and bread if your using it. take the crumbs out and throw in the cooked eggs and do the same. take the eggs out, place a small ammount in with a small amount of crumbs and mix in the blender. mix in a teaspoon of intensive red with warm water until disolved (use as little water as possible). mix in a small amount of this with the eggfood and mix again. continue adding more crumbs, eggs and colourfood untill all is used.

store in an air-tight container for upto one week in a fridge

Chris

Were's the best place to get bogena intensive red from, I used to be able to get hold of carophyll red from a pet food place near where i worked but it was very hard to get hold of as the bloke who ran it said that anglers used to buy big batches of. I still have a bit left but not sure how much to add to egg food mix to get the best results, do you have to be careful the amount you put in the food or drinkin water ?
I have had a look on the tinternet and a company called Haiths sell it along with premixed colour food, is this an alternative to egg food or is it best to use coloured egg food on a regular basis thro the moult.

Hi mate,

i don't know where you could get the bogena insensive red from, maybe if you ask your local petstore to get some in? i don't know about how much carrophyll red is needed for the mix. with the intensive red it has instructions saying to mix 10g to every kilo of food, or every litre of water, then it tells you that one teaspoon is approximately 2g. by my working that means one teaspoon to every 200g of food;-)

for the best results, use colour eggfood along with some disolved in the drinking water for an even appearance. but please DO NOT OVERDOSE, only give as much as the manufactures recommend, as if overdosed, the carrophyll builds up in the liver where it is stored naturally. this puts a strain on the liver, meaning it can't store as many other vitamins etc as the bird normally would, which can turn the bird a purple colour and eventually kill it. if any birds turn purple on the skin/beak, then stop feeding emmediately

Hi Chris 'Jamie Oliver' Dunn,

Thanks for sharing the Red Eggfood recipe with us, good one mate!

So let me get this straight you breed Birds and share your advice on them, grow Giant Pumpkins, breed Native Amphibians for release into the Wild, play Guitar in a Rock Band, you are going to be a Vet, you play Hardball with ALL of the Political Parties (even before being of the age to vote:) ) and you can cook up your own recipe for Red Eggfood!!!:D

Cor blimey Chris next you will be telling us that you are nearly as good looking as me!!

Maybe not? I mean we can all believe the first paragraph, but nearly as good looking as me? Who is going to believe that??:D

Nice one Chris, I hope you have started a trend on this thread, who else has a recipe for their own Homemade Eggfood and wishes to share it with us?

Paul.;)

cheers mate:grin:

the giant pumpkin plan has gone to pot this year as i didn't plant them early enough (well i did but out of 77 seeds from the 150lb last year, only 7 grew:-| and that was on the second attempt!)

i don't have any more recipies to share, other than you can omit the carrophyll red from the last recipie and it makes great all round eggfood, nice n soft:grin:

Hi Chris,

Your sad story on the Giant Pumpkin sounds very much like the problems breeders of over sized Exhibition Budgies and the larger Canary Breeds, a wasted first round and poor fertility.

Not managed to get hold of any bogena intensive but can get both carophyll and sometin called `robin red ' does anybody have any experience with this or is it best to use carophyll. Haiths is cheaper than my petfood supplier for both.

Hello Nigel,

I have no experience with Robin Red, but if you can still source Carophyl Red then my advice would be to buy the Carophyl Red.
But if I remember correctly Carophyl has a short shelf life, it would be wise to ask when this was bought in by your supplier.

In my view it is no great surprise if your local supplier is cheaper than Haiths, I think Haiths have for many years relied on their name to justify high prices on products than can be bettered elsewhere for less money.
Having said that, Haiths have always provided top quality Bird feeds from before the day I was born, but they are long over due in realising that we now have access to top quality Continental Bird feeds that are slightly cheaper.

But if I were you Nigel, I would wait for other replies before taking my advice.

Paul.

Hi nigel,

i'm not sure about using the carrophyll red. it can definately be done, but i don't know the dosage. i would imagine it isn't far off the same as the bogena intensive as that conatins carrophyll as the active ingredient.

Hi mate,

the stuff your on about is similar to eggfood and you could by all means mix it with the eggfood recipie. however it may not work very well and you could end up with patchy coloured birds, or no red at all. i have worked out that it seems to be cheaper to buy pre-mixed Orlux gold red eggfood, than to mix up your own. but i still prefere a combination.

the bogena intesive red comes in a small rectangular box, containing 10g of the carrophyll red mix.
