Just out of interest Matthew, do you feed mealworms to your Pekins during the breeding period?

yeh i do Laura
if they have chicks though its only white mealworms, though as both pairs are in with waxbills mini mealworms are always on offer

Hi Laura,
if you grow your mealworms on and they pupate, the freshly shed pupae when they're nice and white are keenly taken, ours reared their chicks on those among other things for a few weeks (until it went tits up..)
this may be of interest:

only found it by sheer accident when searching for lesser waxworm culture info, the book covers just about everything by the looks of it. there's links to chapter samples, photos, and the contents page. well worth the money, we haven't ordered ours yet but i will be doing so as soon as i can
Chris;)

Looks great Chris - the UV insect trap looks interesting ;-) There are other books there that look very interesting too - great find!

Hi Laura,
there is a few pages in the book that cover buildng the insect trap - something we'll end up doing no doubt. i did notice the pekin chicks in the photo seem far more developed than ours did at 3 days after fledging though, mainly the head is fully feathered where ours were still growing feathers around the base of the beak, and the eyes are wide open, nice and bright.
fingers crossed the next atempt should go better as apparently the problem was vitamin B deficiency (i've got some tablets on standby  )
