One of my bengalese was looking poorly sitting on branch head under wing etc so I brought it in and put it in my hospital cage, whilst it was sleeping head under wing I noticed feathers on its back were missing and guess the zebras may have taken them, gave it multivit and after 3 days it was looking great jumping into canary pan and around the perches and wanting to rejoin its mates.

After only being out for 5 days exact same problem so I brought it in put into ordinary cage which was next to hospital cage which was occupied and I noticed it did not want to go into the roosting pocket or canary pan it used last time it just sat on flour between two D cups which happened to be near the light/heat of the hospital cage next door.

I have now put it into a bigger cage away from the hospital cage and it is now using the roosting pocket and canary pan but still sleeping alot.

It is eating and drinking but does not seem to be getting any better it sleeps alot and I am not sure what to do next, I have given it some calcivit but still no improvement, it could just be my imagination but it seems that often when I check on him [or her not sure which] it is eating from its grit tray is this normal.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

hi jane
if its always eating from the grit tray when not eating food it amy be lacking in calcium..you might try some cuttle fish to see if it has a nibble at that..if its eating and drinking it should be ok ..but there is obvioulsly something missing from its diet

Hi Ken,

Bengalese always has access to cuttlefish and since he has been ill I have given him calcivit, moultonic and recently boost 250, I have offered him cress, lettuce Cede egg food and fresh free range chicken egg boiled but he does not seem interested in any of these just his millet sprays, foreign finch food and grit.

I will keep him in the hospital cage and hope things improve with more time.

Jan.

By the way doe you know if quail eggs boiled are ok for my birds because I have plenty and if they are as good if not better for my birds because the canaries specially love fresh chicken egg and it is a way I can get rid of my quail eggs without actually feeling I have wasted them !!

yeh they are 100% fine, make sure they are not too old though, for obvious reasons, i know someone who uses the eggs to make eggfood

Normally when a bird stays on the floor of the cage and always eating, it has intestinal trouble. Use some antistress powder for these kinds of powders also contain in their mixture some antibiotic which is very good for the intestines. Leave the bird on it for about five days and then back to plain water. It should do the trick. When the bird looks fine do not place it with the others before another week.
Good luck.
Do not forget to change the water daily.
