hi all,

has anyone one here kept this species in the past, or is currently keeping them? i'm considering selling on a few if not all of my CPQ pairs and swapping over to these chaps instead. west hagley aviaries have plenty of pairs in by me, although they are £40pr and i know where i can get a dozen fertile eggs for £10 so might let one of our bantams go broody on them (artifical incubation with all the benifits of parent rearing! )

i've had a good run with the CPQ over the few years i've had them but they are a pain in the backside to sell on at times and there's always the problem of the young cocks getting aggressive toward each other as they mature. although i doubt therse will be much different in that respect i might have better luck selling them on!

any thoughts? advice?

Chris:wink:

hi chris
i like em mate and echo matts sentiments that they are more attractive than cpq..a long while back i had some bob whites and they were a lot easier to sell on like the california ones as they are not as readily avaliable as most

lagopus has just thrown a spanner in the works for me:lol: he's suggested gambel's quail rather than californian. at first i still wanted to go with the cali's but now i've looked up some gambel's im not so sure...

they're pretty much the same as the californians go as far as keeping them is concerned. slightly easier to breed though i think, something to do with canabalism in the chicks of the californian quails being a problem

They look lovely; are they noisey?

Hi Laura,

i'm not too sure to be honest, i think the quailsfromwales website says they have an inoffensive call, unless that was another species i looked over. hopefully i'll be able to tell you in a few weeks if all goes well

i've just checked on the call, its the californian quail that have an inoffensive call, doesnt say anything about the gambel's call...

i've just convinced my mom regarding the quail anyway, one down one to go:razz: although no doubt my dad wont say no, the problem will be arranging transport if they're available in the first place

fingers crossed

Chris;-)

Hi Chris,

I hope I have posted in time mate?

If you intend on housing Californian or Gambels Quail with any of your other birds then please be prepared to kiss goodbye to breeding of the other birds sharing their housing.

Wood Quail are inoffensive birds, but they are also large perching Quail and this does tend to upset small birds sharing their environment.

Californian and Gambels Quail as attractive as they are, are far from suitable as fellow inhabitants sharing small aviaries with Pekin Robins and various Mannikins etc.

Paul.

Hi Paul,

thanks for that, i did ask lagopus about the same thing however he only mentioned that they were unsuitable for keepng with other quail, nothing about them stopping the pekins

bugger!

cheers that would have cocked up the one pair of robins

Chris;)

Hi mate,

I'm pleased you haven't given up on the CPQ yet and changed over to Gambels or Californian Quail.:-D

As nice as they are I would hate to hear of a post from you describing how a clutch of Pekin Robin eggs/chicks had gone breasts up because of a large Wood Quail perching on their nest by mistake.

One alternative though is housing them in one of the pens you have designed for the Chickens?

I went to the aviary to feed up as usual this morning and thought one of my quail had died! She was laying down with her neck stretched out - I stood for a moment just looking as the cock bird started to go over to her. As he got nearer, the hen suddenly perked up, made loads of noise at him and got up, revealing the eggs she had been sat on. The cock bird then took his turn to sit on the eggs
