Just wondered if anyone in the Wimborne, Dorset area had any small, reasonably priced, community finches for sale. I like the orange cheeks - I lost the last of mine last year (old age I think). I'm not looking for zebra finches, or bengalese, as I have those already.

I'd like to add a couple more peaceful finches to my birdroom aviary as it's looking a bit bare in there now.

The birds I have already, in the aviary, are - two red ears, one cordon blue, one weaver, one orange breast, one absolutely beautiful black and white mannikin, two male star finches, and two chinese painted quail.

Thank you.

Hi Diane,

when you say for a community aviary, do you mean your not going to breed from them? only given the import ban a lot of species are threatened with dying out in the uk and to have them and not breed them would be a shame

Oh yes - I intend to breed from them.

Perhaps I should rethink putting them in the aviary and put them in a breeding box (if I ever find a pair, that is). I was just thinking that my aviary was looking a bit bare and was looking for a few more occupants that got on well with each other and also with the birds I already have.

Hi Diane,

there are still pairs of orange cheeks floating around, so they shouldnt be too tricky to find. out of curiosity what species is the odd weaver you have? might be worth pairing him/her up and give those a try, assuming you can find any that is! i know i never had much luck although the bishops are generally the easier ones to comeby

Hi - it's a napolean weaver and I've been wondering whether to start searching for a mate for him - but I've been told that if I have a pair they may become aggressive towards the other birds in the aviary?? So I've rather shied away from that - as I like everyone to be happy out there

What's been your experience - having pairs of weavers in amongst small finches? Any advice much appreciated.

Hi Di,

i had 4 pairs of napoleons in the same flight with other birds and can honestly say they were never agressive in the slightest. the only reason i moved them on was because in 2 years they never once made any attempt to breed despite using water, rain, livefood, various diets, and live grasses etc.

they are one of the more difficult weavers to breed but not that that should put you off, i simply didnt have space to keep both those and the robins so one had to go.

ponderosa aviaries had the 4 pairs from me, although one cock died the night before from stress of being caught, so they might have a trio of 1 cock 2 hens if theyre still there. also woodlea birds have them and i'm sure there was an add from another dealer in C&A with them.

i cant see why they should be a problem so definately worth a try
