I have a outdoor aviary here in the south west of England. The aviary is made of toung and groove soft wood and the iinterior currently lined with 4mm plywood. I recently read an article in 'Cage Bird & Aviary' (UK fort nightly publication) which suggested lining the inside of aviary flights with ceramic tiles to make washing the walls easier.
Does anyone have a view on this suggestion - is it a good thing or bad?
Regards
Dave

hi dave
i have not heard that one but ishould imagine it would creat a lot of condensation when it is cold..you are right they would be easy to clean down but if you have wood at the back like i have shiplap i just clean it and paint it with water based wood treatment.its not compulsary mate but have you put any wire in between as you might lose a few birds if they manage to get behind the wood i have winter quarters in my aviary and that is lined with silver backed bubble wrap which is great for insulation and very easy to wash down

Unfortunately birds do collide with surfaces from time to time and I just feel that ceramic would be a very hard surface......not forgetting in winter it would also hold the cold

i would only use in indoor quarter for messy birds e.g. softbills, and parrots for ease of cleaning

Hello Dave,
The description you have given is quite vague, are you talking about lining the walls of a birdroom, as opposed to lining an aviary?
These two structures are entirely different, if you wish to line the walls of a birdroom with ceramic tiles then I would say this is a good idea, but an outside aviary is a completely different structure requiring no lining at all.
Thanks Dave for explaining the frequency of Cage and Aviary Birds being published, but it seems you are in fact losing out on two copies each month.
Out of interest which bird species do you keep, what are the measurements of your aviary/birdroom and do you know of any other UK breeders of Scarlet Finch Haematospiza sipahi?
Paul.

Hi Tom,
Is Dave a friend of yours, if so do you know if he asking whether to line a birdroom or aviary?
Paul.
