Parrots worth £40,000 are stolen
A collection of more than 35 parrots worth in excess of £40,000 has been stolen from a house in Suffolk.
The birds, each worth between £800 and £2,500, were taken on Friday night from the house of a breeder in Great Livermere, near Bury St Edmunds.
John Hayward, from the Parrot Society, said the theft of the yellow and green birds was the biggest he knew of in recent years.
He said many of the birds may not survive the trauma of being taken.
'Dreadful trauma'
"It's a dreadful thing. The owners bred these birds and many of them are on the most endangered species list, he said.
"They are not the easiest creatures to handle. They are aviary birds so it may well be they were stolen to order.
"They are particularly sensitive, intelligent creatures. "Being kidnapped and bundled into sacks - it is a dreadful trauma for them, so the chances are many will not have survived. The sooner we get any of them back the better."
