i know a few months ago a few of us discussed about decreasing thrush populations.

whilst reading a report published by the RSPB, about the state of the british birds, i came accross figure for both song thrushes and mistle thrush, with mixed news

song thrushes
from 1970 to 2004 they have declined by 50%, however from a shorter term survey (1994 to 2005) they have increased by 18%, so that is something at least.

Mistle thrushes

1970 to 2004 they have decreased 39% and 1994 to 2004 they have decreased 7% so not good news really

Did they indicate why the numbers have decreased?

not what i have read Laura but the report said that they are expected to increase further due to agri-environmental schemes that were introduced late last year i believe when the C.A.P revue was introduced, agriculturally i can understand why these species decline, but urban wise i don't know, most likely i combination of shrinking gardens, and more and more decking and paving, as well as predation from cats, sparrowhaks that are on the increase ten fold, as well as thier nests been robbed or disturbed, possible also gardeners pesticide, including slug pellets, thats my ideas on it anyway

yes thats right Ken

that only effects out migrant population, rather than the resident populations

hi matt
i have read all the reports about all the loss of hedgerows gardens being altered to include more paving and the like...bu that report shocked me when i first read it as it says millions are being lost as oppossed to a few hundred
