Hi Chris

I have just seen your picture of a Fonio seed head on FF3. I hate to say that I grew a lot of this but didn't know what type of grass it was so thought it best not to give it to the birds....DOH!!!

When I am emptying seed trays and pots from the aviary I often put some on the bird table for the wild birds. Around the table there were some potted plants that had died, so instead of throwing it all away the soil from the pots was thrown on the earth in the front garden and dug in.

Not only did I grow millet in this way it would appear that I had a crop of Fonio too. 8)

:shock:Hi Laura and Chris,

Laura,

I did wonder when you showed me the various Millets etc growing in your front garden a few weeks ago?

I'm gutted because like Chris I tried to purposely grow Fonio this year, exept I failed.:(

Chris,

What soil did you use to grow yours mate?

I believe my attempt failed due to using peat instead of soil?

Paul.

Hi Paul,

just regular B&Q compost, peat is probably too acidic for fonio as the plant originates from poor (sandy) soils. might be worth mixing some sand in with compost and a touch of grit for drainage. let it germinate, give it a few eeks then start providing a high nitrogen feed. then when the plants are large change to a high potassium feed to encourage flowering and large seed heads. works with the millet anyway
