hello all

after getting my zossies i decided to start providing nectar,

the following ingrediants are what i have used for mine, after being recommended by the breeder

1 scoop SMA Wysoy milk
2 scoops Glucose powder
1 scoop normal Sugar
pint of water (some of which boiled from kettle to dissolve it)

that is said to be allot better than the commercial crap that is available

with the added bonus of Pekins robins loving it

Hi Matthew,

You sarcastic bugger, well done with getting your Pekins to take the nectar, I've been trying a simple mix with mine but they wont take to it at all, and they have ignored the soaked sponge cake too.:-|
The good news is that my Rhodospingus Finches love the nectar mix, and the Waxwings cleared the soaked spong cake in seconds.:D

The mix I use is far more simple than yours and is probably less nutritious because of not using Wysoy, but I use a honey, white, and brown sugar solution.
I will continue trying to get the Pekins onto it though.

So have you tried sponge cake with the Zosterops and Pekins?

Paul.;-)

Hi Matthew,

I will give your mix a go mate,;) but I think I may need to either use the standard nectar tube I have, or paint the base of the tubular drinker red to attract the Pekins to it?

I will also add the soaked sponge cake to their fruit container in the hope that they will take to this too.

hello Paul

why do you need to paint your drinkers red, mine just take it from the standard blue anti-algae drinkers

Hi Matthew,

As I have said before my Pekin Robins have ignored the nectar solution offered up until now, the standard nectar feeders have the outlet painted red in order to attract Hummingbirds, Sunbirds, Sugarbirds, Dacnis, Flowerpeckers, Flowerpiercers etc to feed from them.
I'm hoping if I paint the base of the tubular drinker red then the Pekins may pay more attention and sample the solution on offer?

oh reyt,

it surprises me, Pekin robins are into everything, and don't miss a thing such as free food

Hi mate,

It took a long time for my pair to take to Waxworms.

And Crickets are a different thing altogether!!

Hi Laura,

As Matthew says my pair of Pekin Robins are weird, the pair that Alan Brown has (from the same batch as my pair) were also reluctant to sample various food's such as Waxworms etc.
Because they have been housed on their own since I have bought them may also explain why they haven't sampled different food items?

I plan to over winter the Pekins with other birds with the hope that they will accept other food items in time for next years breeding season through education from Laughing Thrushes and Waxwings?
