Well done Matthew - Glad someone's having success
How are you breeding Avadavats - outside or indoors , aviary or cage. What are they feeding the chicks?
I ask because I've been toying with the idea of trying to set up a breeding programme of my own but only have a birdroom full of 4 foot cages. Are they really aviary birds or would they settle into cages?
Any thoughts?
Mark

Hello Matthew and Mark,
Matthew,
Congratulations again mate, it seems that most of our successes are late ones this year, which make them all the more welcome after poorer early results.
I have some good news that you will be interested in too, Annie the WFS member I arranged two pairs of Strawberries for, called me yesterday to tell me she has fledged her first two Strawberry Finch chicks.:-D
Although Annie doesn't have internet access she is willing to assist in the breeding programme for the Strawberry Finch, I'm sure as long as breeders stay in contact there is a very good chance of establishing these birds.
Mark,
I'm sure Matthew will give you more details on breeding Strawberries in the cages you have in mind, but personally I believe cages of this size are suitable to breed them in as long as the cages are quite deep too.
If you provide cover for both privacy and possible nesting sites as well as a choice of nest boxes and baskets, I'm sure you should get good results from them.
I would suggest Fruit Flies and soaked seed being available for rearing food, but as I said Matthew will provide more details for you.
All the best, Paul.

thanks Mark
i cannot get my avadavats to breed in cages, in aviaries, yeh piece of..... cake, my breeding pair has bred in an inside aviary, they built their own nest as always in some artifiacal ivy, i have put no nesting stuff what so ever in the outdoor flight, its just purely for exercise, and i can say the system has worked well all 3 species in there have bred for me.
They require nothing special to breed just a good diet which all birds should be on.
mine have a pot of buctons foriegn finch, a pot of waxbill finch mix from pro birds, a pot of moist emp eggfood, a pot of probirds moist eggfood a pot of oyster shell grit, a pot of insect patee, mealworms a few buffalo worms and millet sprays, that is all
they can be bred in cages, and 4ft sound great, but i have yet to master it i have on ever raised 2 in cages, but don't let me put you off.
Paul thats brilliant i'm glad after all that fuss of getting the birds Annie has already been paid off
Matthew
