hi all
well as the title says i have had some more bad luck, yesterday after the flash floods i went into the aviary as i noticed that some of the back boards were wet and i knew the roof was watertight, but where the roof overhung at the back by nearly 2 feet the rain had not run straight off due to the amount but had turned back on itself and came back towards the aviary underneath and right were it was dripping there was a nest with 3 eggs in it and they were saturated as it was an open top box and also the hen was laid in a small pool of water....thats how good mothers bengies are she didnt even leave the nest anyway i checked the eggs and they were fertile so while i was making a new nest up i put her in the hospital cage to dry out and warm up i put the eggs in another nest and put her back outside she is as right as rain...rain rain rain who mentioned rain sorry got carried away there fro a minute i checked on her today and she was still sitting on the eggs but i dont know if the will be anygood or not now they have been well and truly soaked.....but i also found at the same time a java sparrow hunched up which to be honest i have never seen before in my life i caught her up and it looks as if it has had some kind of stroke as its head is at an odd angle and one leg is stuck out side ways..its not broken but she cannot perch properly so i will just have to wait and see but i have made sure the water cannot run back anymore bleeding rain makes me sick...hosepipe bans my a**e

Hi Ken,

Sorry to hear what happened!

Hoping right along with you that that the bengie eggs may turn out alright.

Keep us posted on your little java. It does sound neurological in nature. Everytime I see one of these, I think of you! They are cute!

If ya dont mind...could you send some rain this way? Hasnt rained in near a month...and it's been about 102-105 nearly everyday. Dry as tinder...and fire danger is extremely high!

hi nikki
nice to here from you,it hasnt really rained that much this summer but when it does its like a whole months worth in one night and the thing is you cant do anything at night if these things happened diring the day i am always in my birdroom to observe..i know these things happen and they will always keep happening but when you cannot do anything like dose the bird with something i just feel useless i have left it on a low heat in the hospital cage but it doesnt look well and i cant do anything else and there is no way i could put it out of its misey as some of these top breeders are always telling people to do

Kenny, I'm right there with ya on this one. It is hard and we do feel helpless. But, our hearts are in the right place as well as out intentions.

Sometimes it really is harder to do nothing thatn to step in and assist what WE think is inevitable. Even though it truly is, I havent built up any strength at all to do it.

Chin up, Buddy....you did well.

Hi Ken,

I'm pleased the Bengalese has made a good recovery,:D but I'm sorry to hear the bad news of the Java.:-(

As you may remember I had a similar problem with one of my Red Crested Finch chicks, so I can sympathise with your frustration in not knowing what to do for the best,:| there is nothing more you can do than making it is as comfortable as possible with the extra heat.

Paul.

hi paul
the extra heat as done no good as i got up first light to see how it was and i am afraid it was dead ,so i am at a loss as to why it died ...but the bengies are ok as i have said before i know you get this stuff happening as it has done to you also but you never get used to it..onwards and upwards!

Hi Ken,

I didn't think the heat would have cured the Java, if it was suffering fits or strokes then we can only hope the heat would be a comfort for the bird in its last hours.

And I'm pleased the Bengalese has recovered and that you are staying possitive, we can only hope we all have better results next year mate.

All the best Paul.;)

So true, kenny.

I have flashbacks of feeding that little chick with the hole in its crop...it would beg soooo loud...and I'd feed it...and it would just pour out of the hole. Nothing I could do but feed it and keep it warm and wait for it to pass.

We do all we can...and really, it is all we can do.

hi matt
i am beggining to think this new shed and aviary is cursed,my old tatty shed and aviary was great for turning out decent birds...this is one of the crapest years i have had...i know there is no hurry and its not a competition but it just seems that everything is against me with regards to breeding anything at all.i have not changed anything they are fitter if anything by having a bit of extra space to fly in but i am not only loosing the chicks but the parents aswell.....today i am sick of it all!

Oi Ken,

Dont you dare quit mate!!:-x

You know very well this hobby tests our patience almost every year, but without people such as yourself there wouldn't be a hobby.

This year has been a testing period for many of us,:-( but your comeback is an example to us all.

Please hang on in there mate, I'm sure next year will provide the results you hope for.

Paul.;-)

hi all
well i came back from having the car serviced today, with hardly anytime to go in the birdroom got in about 5 as we had to do the shopping afterwards went in the aviary and put some greenstuff down so the quail could reach (cress )they love it i went in the birdroom to fill the seed pots for the ones i keep in there and i heard this familiar little rasping sound ....i dont know how many ...but the bengies that had produced 4 chicks have now got some more chicks...i must admit i have been down a bit the past 14 days but that familiar noise gave me the same buzz...so i just made them some eggfood as you do! and left them to it i suppose i will have to do the same thing tommorrow also......this bird keeping lark keeps you busy...........dont it!

hi all
i cant beleive it but this morning there was 5 fawn zebras sat on a branch this morning 7 including the parents they have been coming out one at a time.how the hell all 7 fitted in that little wooden hut is beyond me they made sure this time that nothing happened to the babies ...the ironic thing is that the first born in the aviary are all pure fawn zebras with no other colours mixed in both the parents are fawn but as you know with zebs that is nothing to go by....the irony is that the first pair of birds i ever had was a pair of fawn zebras and they produced nothing but fawn chicks ......i kept them both till they passed away a long time ago...but this brings back so many memories i still cant beleive there are 5 as i have no other zebs in there..

hi all
well once again i find my self st a loss as to what happened,i had got 4 bengalese hatched with 2 of the young being white which with the pairing i had, i expected 1 white at least.i just had to find the right pairing with the white carrier.found the cock bird....mated.....hatched 10 days ago.......2 whites among them which i half expected....went in the shed this morning after a night of some nutter letting fireworks off and the cock white carrier bengalese was hanging from the front of the nest by its claws obviously night fright.....................i hate fireworks and the people who let them off well before they are due...but even more i hate the people who sell them to underage imbeciles

Hi Ken,

I'm so sorry you have lost birds as a result of people using fireworks,:( the idiots letting them off have no thought for the damage they cause by doing so.
And even if they did they would continue to let them off for their own kicks.

We don't stand a chance in stopping this happening because there is so much money to be made by our own Government.

Paul.
