well it has taken many, many months, but finally i have my very first red headed finch on the perch - or should i say floor, as it isn't able to fly well enough, or i haven't seen it attempt to. its been well over 3 weeks in the nest! the lazy sod. its in a cage anyway, so there no worries there.
i'll keep you posted i hope to get a few more chicks out before the end of the year

I know how you feel Matt, I have some (number unknown) chick(s) in a nest that are very reluctant to leave and it is driving me mad!
I pop home most lunch times in the hope that the birds have left their nest...maybe this weekend :?

Well done Matthew,
I bet you are one happy chappie,:D congratulations mate!!
When I read that the chick was in the nest for over three weeks I thought that was a very long fledging period too, I checked in THE MACDONALD ENCYCLOPEDIA OF Cage and Aviary Birds by Matthew M. Vriends and he states that Red Heads take 23-24 days to fledge so this isn't out of the ordinary for the species.
But I do agree with you, they are lazy sods aren't they.
I feel that theres another Matthew Guest article coming on people.
Now you know what you have cracked it with the first chick, good luck with breeding a few more.
All the best matey, Paul.;)

 thankyou good sir
yep, i think you are correct i'm brewing up a nice big article on them, as i have experienced plenty with them over the months, however i want to wait a little longer and get more chicks on the perch so far, i have been doing abit of moving with them and have set to pairs down for breeding, the first pair (from Dorset birds) laid an egg withing hours of me putting up the box. pair number 3 have been sitting for a few days now. i need to get the fosters up and running now
i thought i'd never get there

hi paul
you say about the red heads being lazy but non of my javas i have bred up to date never venture out of the nest until 30 days old usually they are ready to eat seed when they come out and they are just mineature versions of thier parents does anyone else experience this or does anyone elses come out earlier as i have never really broached the subject before
