Hi Geoff,
Red or Virginian Cardinals currently command a price ranging from £250 - £350pr (and most likely to continually rise in price for the near future), there are very few available at present but small numbers of them are being bred in the UK and on the Continent.
The minimum sized aviary to house and breed from these birds should measure 6ft long x 6ft wide x 6ft high and include natural cover such as Conifer etc, in an aviary of this size they should be housed alone.
Diet should include the following, a mixed variety of seed mixtures such as Foreign Finch, Canary, British, Weed seeds and Hedgerow seeds to give them as much variety to choose from as possible.
Insectivorous mixture, Eggfood and Livefood such as Mealworms, Silent or Brown Crickets, Waxworms etc.
Fruit may or may not be taken, depending on individual birds.
Virginian Cardinals build a cup nest amongst cover, but allowing the hen visability from the nest site, which seems to be common with both North and South American Finches, Seedeaters, Cardinals, Buntings etc.
They can be housed and bred in mixed species aviaries of a much larger size than described above, but avoid housing them with other birds that have a large amount of red plumage and are of a similar size.
Paul.
