just a post to say halo!
as a kid i used to breed and show canarys and had a few zebs, will my dad concentrated on breeding lovly fat bullfinches! due to a move we had to give up the avairys:cry: (as a 12 year old i was gutted)
now my folks have retired and have a very big garden thoughts ar turning back
to aviarys!
think my dad is keen on getting some canarys in once the aviary is complete (perhaps my old favorit fife,s)
but we have spent so long out of the bird scene its hard to know wots out ther and wot is available! we have decided to stear away from finches due to us being completly
over run with zebs and the constant beep beep beep! they wher even nesting in food bowls and any nook or crany they couild find! (so every bird show we had a big cage of a mish mash of zebs for sale)
the planned aviary is set to be about 20ft long and and 5ft wide heavily planted with bamboo with bird shed.
my plan is to get a quality pair chinese painted quail (realy fancy the normal white crested variety,) and maybe breed a few broods in an incubator tho parent rearing would be better (maybe just one or 2 so can asure good aviary homes and not indoor cages)
be nice if i could get some with pedigree so i can try and perfect one or 2
(echo from my canary days) but who knows dont realy know about availability of the white crested!

anyway peeps any suggestions would be good as far as my fathers choice of bird would be great, we have staks of common sence and a solid background with birds
and ar open minded!
oh and excessive noise is an issue! no manic all day screamers lol! and we have never been fans of the parrot family. thanks
geoff!

Hi Geoff

I too have to be careful not to pick noisy birds. I have a variety that includes:- Jacarini Finches, Grassfinches, Bengalese, Orange Bishops, Bourkes (very quiet parakeets), Zosterops, Strawberry Finches, Lavendar Finches, Cape Sparrows......the list goes on......does that help???

Hi Geffski,

Welcome to the Feathered Friends forum.;)

I'm pleased your parents ar in a position in having a large garden and going back to having aviaries.

I hope that you manage to find a pair of White Crested Chinese Painted Quail and that when you do that you ar able to breed from them, either in an incubator or parent reared.

Please let us know when you ar able to find the White Crested Chinese Painted Quail because some of us here ar looking for them

Like yourself I'm not a fan of Parrots due to the noise they ar capable of making, but I'm pleased you ar open minded regarding other birds such as Weavers.

Thankfully Weavers ar quietly voiced birds, they ar willing nest builders and ar capable of building many nests every year under aviary conditions, some keepers ar lucky in having Weaver species breeding for them quite freely.

Paul.;)

hi geoff
hope you will be able to understand this ...but here goes when you press the reply to post box..a little futher down is a box marked manage attachments.press that and you will see 3 browse boxes which enable you to upload up to 3 pics at a time on to your post...your pics need to be reduced to 800x 600 so they will fit then you press the upload box and then copy the text that appears one at a time and paste them into your post...this should work the same for all forums mate

thanks mate ill give it a try when i have some pics for you!

in regards to the normal white crested cpq, i hear ther ar atempts to
breed one with a totaly white face and crest, to no avail (maybe wrong)
i think this is going to be my project!
as far as my fathers choice of birds its still very much up in the air (excuse the pun:roll: )
it gose from maybe weavers to maybe red cardinals to whydas and then back to canarys who knows, but have found you guys very out going and im shur
u will help us out as far as species choice gose!

Hi Geoff,

maybe canaries would be best until you find your feet, they're easy to come by and don't cost the earth. at the moment weavers are becoming quite rare in captivity, whydahs moreso, and red cardinals are far from common also. it wouldn;t be right to keep any of them unless you have a damn good idea of how to go about breeding them. whydahs especially as you'd need a decent colony of breeding waxbills of the correct host species, in time with the whydahs being in breeding condition and that's extremely difficult to do unless your already well experienced with breeding waxbills and other foreign finches
