hello all
as the title said what do you think of a threesome? - between red headed finches of course :-D
i got 1 cock and two hen red heads from Chris, i released them into one of my breeding cages just until i had the room to seperate them, well i nest box was left in, they soon started spending time inside, so i thought i would simply humour them and put a bit of nesting stuff in, well a small amount was taken, and that was that, until today i noticed they were sitting in there, so i was a very naughty boy indeed and stuck my fingers in there and to my surprise i felt a warm clutch of eggs, i haven't established which hen laid them but they all seem to want to sit, they get on well and that, until livefood is put in, then its every birds for them selves.
i know i'm being a foolish idiot doing this, tempting fate and all that
what do you lot think?
needless to say i will keep an eye or maybe two, on them as often as i can

Hi Matt,
well i didn't expect that, i thought you'd get 2 hens on separate nests but you've proved me wrong. good luck anyway, mine are still fat n lazy and show no interest in breeding
Chris;)

  cheers,
Chris
if you are giving plenty of livefood i see no reason why your birds should not go down in your set up,
all the red heads i have go down very fast, lay eggs and hatch them out, i just cannot get much further, though hopefully soon that will all change....

Hi Matthew and Chris,
Matthew,
Congratulations chappie, as everone else has said leave things as they are for now and see how things work out with the current situation, you never know this could work out to be an ideal way of breeding Red Headed Finches (with this trio at least)?:D
Chris,
I had much the same problem as you are experiencing when I tried to breed Red Heads years ago, I found them to be very lazy birds that put on weight easily due to a good diet and inactivity (something I suffer from personally:lol:).
The birds I had were housed on their own in a 6ft long x 3ft wide x 6ft high aviary, but were very inactive and failed to produce full clutches or even hatch any of the few eggs that were laid.:-(
Matthew,
A friend and I have found that Cut-Throats and Red Heads aren't the most tollerant Finches of nest inspections, so now that you are aware of eggs being present I would suggest that you avoid any further nest inspections.
All the best to you matey, Paul.:D

thanks Paul
mine aren't too bothered about nest inspections they are that keen to sit, i think mine are crossed with a broody bantie, when i have taken eggs away for fostering and replace them with dummies they jump straight back on, though obviously i do stay well clear and this trio i have got i will leave well alone, and see if they will parent rear for me.

Hi Matt,
the 3 you had off me should be fine with nest inspections, considering some are closed rung and none have been fostered. at least i think they were closed rung
Paul,
i think i may try spliting mine up into pairs and one trio as soon as i can to see if it speeds things up at all. fat and lazy does seem to be rather fitting though
Chris:wink:

Hi Chris and Matthew,
I wish you both the best of luck with the Red Heads regarding parent rearing,;) but if fostering is the answer then I wish the best with this method also.
All the best to you both, Paul.;)
