Hi Ken,

I realise you have titled the new thread as Green Singers, but are these the birds we decided were in fact Yellow Bellied Canaries?
The reason I ask is because the bird in your photo looks to be a Yellow Bellied Canary, regardless of which species they are if they have constructed a nest and they are feeding each other the chances are they could well be serious in making a breeding attempt.

All the best mate, I hope they breed for you.

Paul.:D

hi paul
not as yet mate, they have built a great nest but i am keeping my eyes open as there seems to be some sabotage going on they are defending it most of the time but i think other parties are interested so i am just monitoring it at the moment as i dont know who the culprit is who keeps pinching some of the nest material

Hi Ken,

Its a shame their having to cope with inteference from the other birds, how about offering the other birds a bunch of nesting material a short distance from the Yellow Bellies nest, hopefully they might take this instead of destroying the nest?

hi paul
i am trying to isolate them so they are not disturbed by anything else but i think the culprit is the hecks, all the other birds have nests with eggs and there nests are still the same as they were a few days ago but he has been buzzing about annoying the hell out of everything.i am still searching for a mate for him but i have not had much luck yet

Hi Ken,

Good luck in eventually finding a hen Hecks Grassfinch to pair with the cock you have,;-) I hope that as soon as they have settled that they wont interfere with your Yellow Bellied Canaries nest.

hi paul
i noticed rather late tonight just as the birds were going to roost, the cock yellow belly was feeding the hen bird and i noticed when she turned round she was really swollen at the back end ...she looked as if she was about to lay an egg but i just hope that she wasn`t going to have a problem as it was far to late to catch her up plus i think it would have stressed her enough to break the egg inside her trying to net her i hope it was warm enough for her to pass the egg i noticed the other day they had moved to another nest but i didnt want to push my luck in saying that i may get some eggs

Hi Ken,

This does sound promising mate, regarding your concerns if anything could go wrong with her passing the egg you were right in leaving her to it, just check on her in the morning and I hope she will be OK?:D
Most larger Finch hens show signs of laying up to three days before the event, so if an egg hasn't been laid by tomorrow morning please don't be too disappointed.

Good luck though mate, I really hope you manage to breed one round from these birds before the end of the season this year.

All the best, Paul.

hi paul
thanks mate,i hope you are right as i certainly would like to have some eggs atleast from this pair.but i left the out door shelter door open as it was a bit warm and she was perched on top of the door and she kept looking underneath her body as if she was expecting something.... i wish i had seen her earlier as i dont want her to get bound up her rear end was really fat and swollen
