I have four babies in the nest, trouble is I am not sure if they are Bengalese or Hecks  The Hecks were in the nest first but then the Bengalese took over. This happened to me last year as well despite there being plenty of nest boxes in the aviary.

My Cut-Throats are also nesting, they have picked the biggest nest box they could find, a parakeet box  they have built the nest up so much that I can't see in there!

2 Weaver nests have appeared, strange thing is that the cock isn't even showing signs of going in to his breeding colours yet! With my past experience of breeding these birds it was always the male that constructed the nest in order to attract the female, so who is doing this  :?:

Hi Laura,

I look forward to knowing what chicks you end up with from the mystery nest.

Cut-throats are probably more suited to Budgie nest boxes rather than the standard Finch nest box, good luck with yours.

I suspect your Weaver cock is still making nests despite being out of colour.

Paul.

I heard my Weaver calling yesterday he has been quiet for so long!

He is chasing the girls around even though there is no sign of his breeding colours yet!!

I have started feeding live food much earlier this year, I wonder if that is what has spurred him on?

Hello Laura,

I've noticed Weaver Junior has small areas of red feathering showing so maybe Weaver Senior will do so soon (the randy little man  ).

How long has he been out of colour now?

I know you asked me the Livefood question offline, but yes I believe the fact you have started your Birds on Livefood sooner this year is playing a big part in the cock Weaver 'doing the do' at this time of year.

Paul.

Hi Laura,

This may mean he will be out of colour for a couple more months yet, :(
but who knows the recent sunshine might help him moult sooner. :D

Hi,

i've read somewhere about Bishops being brought into condition with rainfall. this would make sense with them originating from Africa where there is a rainy season prior to breeding. maybe if you put the sprinklers on for an hour every day you could stimulate them?
